Teaching English and Maths to children ranging from age 5 to 14.
We have 80 children who come to the center every day, Monday to Friday for the catch up program. Some of these children never got opportunity to go to school due to different challenges. While others dropped out of school at different levels. The teachers group the children according to academic ability and teach them in those different groups. Due to lack of man power, we usually have three groups each being handled by two teachers. 5 to 6 groups would be the most appropriate. The children are eager to learn. We try to make learning as creative and enjoyable as possible especially for the very young ones so that we do not loose their attention. Teachers also keep assessing children who have long or short-term learning difficulties and work with the staff to identify individual pupils' special needs and way forward.
Children arrive at the center by 9: 00 AM. We begin with a simple game to bring them together. Then we have morning glory where we sing different songs and read the word of God and pray together to commit the day in God's hands. We then go into groups to learn for 30 minutes for young ones and 45 minutes older ones. Then we go into games, roll call and depart at exactly 12: 30 PM. In the after noon, the teachers rest and prepare for the next day.
We have a recreation centre in the neighbourhood where there are a number of free time activities. We also have enough space for playing with the children all sorts of games. We have church activities almost every day. We have a farm where we keep cows and pigs. We also have gardens for the compound and crop growing where we do garden work.
