For over 15 years, Archipelagos has been monitoring the biodiversity of shallow, littoral zone ecosystems of the eastern Aegean Sea.

For over 15 years, Archipelagos has been monitoring the biodiversity of shallow, littoral zone ecosystems of the eastern Aegean Sea. The data collected enables us to get an understanding of local conditions, ecosystem changes, processes and threats. Surveys have a wide range of focus, including:
• Conducting biodiversity assessments (fish, invertebrates and algae) and analyzing the spread of local vs invasive species.
• Determining impacts of the factors threatening protected species and ecosystems, as well as colonization rates.
• The collection of data regarding invasive species via underwater visual census (UVC) surveys, questionnaires and recordings of fisheries’ landings.
• Creating of GIS maps which provide an overview of species distribution
• Experimenting on sustainable mooring systems and artificial reefs.

Typical day

Field-work, including snorkel or kayak surveys.
Office-work, organising and analyising data collected from surveys.
Online literature and internet research.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (intermediate level)
Education Requirements
Marine Sciences, Biology, Environmental Sciences at University level
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
• At least one year of college or university studies in the fields of marine, environmental, geographical and/or related sciences
• Experience in identification of fish, invertebrates and/or marine flora preferred
• Experience in snorkeling, free-diving and/or kayaking
• Capacity for accurate and consistent data collection and analysis
• Comfortable working under low supervision as well as leading a project independently
• Ability to write scientific reports and papers
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Archipelagos Institute (your host organization) provides consulting and is keen to answer all your questions. Once you reserved your spot, you will receive the contact details of your volunteer project.

On-site services

Services by Archipelagos Institute
Monthly fees of 650 euro include: 
Living expenses (shared accommodation, all meals, wi-fi)

Transport for working purposes
Greek language lessons

Students and recent graduates are advised to explore possible funding through their universities, by getting in touch with the Finance / International Relations / Placement/ Erasmus+ Offices at their Universities or other relevant grant providing organizations in their region.

*Travelling costs are NOT included and are covered by the participant.

Accommodation
Dorm room with between 3 and 7 other roommates and a bathroom for each room.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Samos Airport (SMI) in Samos. We assist you to find cheap flights to Greece.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Greece provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Greece you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Greece.

You can volunteer at the project site in Pythagorio, Samos/Greece between 12 weeks and 50 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Archipelagos Institute will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Greece.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with {project.name} during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
