Coastal Marine Conservation

Come to Phang Nga, Thailand and discover the stunning but delicate marine and coastal ecosystems that need protection from human encroachment.

Location

Situated along the Andaman coast, Phang Nga is a spectacular region renowned for its magnificent scenery and geographical wonders of limestone rock formations jutting out from beneath the sea and sunken caverns.  Its clear waters and abundance of marine life make it a top destination for snorkelers and scuba divers but its enchanting beaches also appeal to those looking for a laid-back atmosphere with where cultures meld together.  A short bus ride from the base, Phang Nga Bay is probably most famous for some of its many tiny islands including Koh Tapu where the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun was shot.

About the Project

This project takes a holistic approach to conservation.  It focuses on protecting the delicate coastal and marine ecosystems that are suffering because of economic pressures and natural destruction.  In addition, the goal is to educate local villagers, hotel workers, dive shop owners and others about environmental issues and how to avoid destroying the coral reefs and fish and turtle populations while encouraging sustainable economic ventures and food sources.

Volunteer Work and Contribution

The volunteer activities that you will be involved in will vary because much of the work is seasonal.  From November through April, the main tasks will revolve around sea turtle conservation and beach cleanup.  From May through October, the rainy season, the work will focus on terrestrial conservation and surveying biodiversity in National parks. You will also be involved in tourist management activities. Regardless of the time of year, you will have the opportunity to participate in community work, environmental education and even teach English to National park rangers and the general community.
