Agency | Encounter Local

We work with existing community projects and schools in providing education and care to both fortunate and a bit fortunate children in the community. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Singles
Couples
Families
Groups
50+
Our volunteer program is based in Nairobi, Kenya with community and teaching placements currently located in Mukuru, one of the largest slum / informal settlement area in East Africa.

We offers volunteers a platform to learn, empower, experience, enjoy and work towards 'setting up structures', all of which have the potential to bring positive outcomes in the community. We work with existing community and teaching projects as we believe they are in the best position to determine which areas volunteers will make a great impact and as well have life changing experiences.

One of the teaching project we are in partnership with currently is St. Teresa Community School, a relatively small pre-school and primary school with lots of energy from kids in Mukuru slums, Nairobi. The school was started by Caroline in February 2013 with 5 children and because of the need in the community the school currently has a total of 215 boys and girls ranging from 4 to 12 years old.

The school provides education to both the unfortunate and a bit fortunate children in the community. It comprises of 13 classrooms, starting from the pre - school level up to grade / year six. These classrooms are small and packed, however the ambiance is great and the children only desire to learn and have fun.

Volunteer involvement areas

Under the supervision of the local teachers / staff, volunteers provide assistance in teaching of the children and that is basic English lessons & number work, carrying out creative arts & crafts, leading games or sport sessions, and also assist in developing teaching aids and resources. Other involvement areas may include, building or renovating classrooms to assist in providing a better quality education and learning environment for these children.
