The location

Kokrobite, our project site is a small fishing village, about 30 km west of Accra. It is located on a long stretch of beach on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, and is a popular destination for tourists seeking sandy beaches. Due to the low-income of its populations, like any other typical rural community in Ghana, most families in Kokrobite face serious challenges in accessing basic healthcare. Community level intervention and health clinics offer services to local families at minimal or no cost. The introduction of medical insurance in Ghana has drastically increased attendance at the Kokrobite Healthcare Centre thereby necessitating additional support from volunteers.

The project

The project will offer opportunity for volunteers to become familiar with the health challenges facing the people. Working conditions are likely to be quite different from those you may be accustomed to. Medical equipment are often basic and the quantity and variety of medicines can be very limited.

Depending on your level of knowledge, experience and skill the work can range from observing doctors to offering basic assistance. Please note, without an appropriate license, volunteers are restricted on what they can do. As a medical volunteer you will be working in the local clinic at Kokrobite, helping to lessen the burden on the over-stretched human resource of the clinic. This facility is often stretched to breaking point and in desperate need of additional help.

Volunteer work

You will spend the first few days shadowing a local Health worker and learning about local techniques and common diseases. Once you feel comfortable, you will have the opportunity to begin performing some basic procedures under supervision.Volunteers can help the centre by recording patient attendance, patient history, temperatures, performing patient examinations, providing pre-natal care, assisting in deliveries and educating patients and community groups on how to help prevent the diseases that most affect them.Services provided by the Kokrobite Health Centre include the following;

  • General health consulting
  • Child welfare clinic
  • Family planning
  • Nutritional care
  • Anti-natal and post-natal care

There are also two satellite community clinics within our program which offer general health care.

Typical day

Volunteers are generally expected to work at their placement five days a week. Weekday mornings will start at around 9am. Mornings  start with consultation with local staff members to discuss the needs of the day, and the volunteer may be asked to help out with a wide range of activities. At around 12pm you will get a break for lunch, which you can take with other volunteers and local staff.

You will generally finish your placement at around 5pm, though this will depend on the opening times of your placement. When you finish you will get a chance to unwind with other volunteers and local team members over dinner. Volunteers can help the centre by recording patient attendance, patient history, temperatures, performing patient examinations, providing pre-natal care, assisting in deliveries and educating patients and community groups on how to help prevent the diseases that most affect them.

Weekends are the volunteer's  own, and there are always plenty of extra adventures to do with your free time/
