South America Inside

Community Outreach

Quito , Ecuador show on map

Support families that come from indigenous backgrounds in Ecuador. Learn about their unique culture and make a positive impact in their community.

The Project

This project takes place in a region where 90% of the population is indigenous. Their main language is Kichwa, and the second language spoken is Spanish. Due to past volcanic activities, the region disposes very fertile land.

The people of the region of Imbabura and Otavalo are very well known in South America and on an international level for their traditional crafts and animal markets that happen every Saturday. As a volunteer, you will get the chance to live in these traditional communities and help with the production of handmade goods. These goods are essential to the community, as most families rely on them for income. Volunteers who are not incredibly handy can help with manual tasks on the local farms to support the agricultural production. The food produced there is used for personal consumption by the families, and anything left over is sold in local markets.

Your Tasks

On a typical work day, you will help the local women make handmade goods while you also learn about their culture. If you are not able to carry out this task, then you will be take part in manual tasks on local farms. If your main interest is to work with children, please let us know prior, and we will arrange activities for you at local schools where you can assist teachers.

By taking part in this project, you will be able to experience the authentic culture of natives in Ecuador, learning and teaching new skills on a regular basis. Families work very hard to provide for their families, so your help is extremely appreciated by them.

Free-time activities

There are many activities to do in your free time, such as exploring the volcanic lands. Many people hike around the local area to see the magnificent views that Ecuador has to offer. The region is also very famous for its artesanal markets and rich cultural heritage.
