EcoSwell

Community Reforestation Supporter

NGO | EcoSwell

Reforestation project which aims to empower the local women and educate the local population on the importance of reforestation to help fight and mitigate climate change.

The people of Lobitos remember that decades ago, their desertic landscape was once green. Without trees, and the shade they provide, the intense heat of Peru's northern sun makes it difficult to enjoy public space. Our qualitative research, and the direct demands of the women and the elderly, has led us to acknowledge the importance of green neighborhoods for community development and community building.

About the Program

Greening is not easy in an arid land where lack of water is a main issue, and many public efforts to do so in the past have not been successful. This is why the "Green Lobitos" project, designed in early 2015 by our insightful intern Dave Smith, directly involves fishermen families, as well as public entities and private companies in a community initiative aiming to recover the peruvian dry forest sustainably through the application of permaculture principles.

By slowly building trust through sensitization at a household level, EcoSwell has achieved the commitment of 32 leaders, mainly women, which have been empowered to raise environmental awareness in their neighborhoods by reforesting public space, utilizing in-house waste and water reuse methods. Together, they have planted and are consistently taking care of more than 70 seedlings, some of which have already grown into full-sized trees. During 2017, the number of families involved will scale up to 45, and the adopted trees will surpass 100.

Your Role as a Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers/interns to help out with the house-to-house visits, engaging new families, educating them on the reuse techniques, monitoring the project results and, of course, helping to plant new seedlings and protect them with reused material. An intermediate level of spanish would be preferable but is not a requirement, as there are many hands-on activities that also require support. Volunteers will have the to chance to get involved in other EcoSwell projects/activities as well.

The project currently impacts the members of 32 fishermen families, raising their awareness on environmental issues and preparing them for climate change impact mitigation. It specially empowers women and children, as they are the ones who lead the greening efforts. The activities resulting from the project have reported as helpful for family self-esteem and in improving relationships between neighbors. In the long run, the trees will provide shade and protection from strong winds, increasing comfort inside their homes and in public spaces.

What Qualifications we are looking for

An intermediate level of spanish would be preferable but is not a requirement, as there are many hands-on activities that also require support. No academic qualifications are required although a permaculture, forestry backgrounds and/or agriculture would be very welcomed.

Free-time activities

Daily world class surfing (all levels), fishing trips, whale and sea lion watching, exploring new beaches, yoga, library access, baking/cooking, personal development, constant socialising with other travellers, within other fun activities.

We have a lot going on, and you’ll love it. Maybe even a little bit too much… many of our interns and volunteers have come to question their own lifestyles after experiencing ours! Come, try something new whilst you still have time and see for yourself.

Other activities, such as swimming with wild turtles, sea-lion and whale watching, artisanal open sea fishing with local fishermen, within others are affordable and can be arranged but are not included in the programme. These come at an additional cost, but in reality they are very cheap. These activities are payable to the people who run them (ie: the local artisanal fishermen who take you on their boats) and as such we like to support the local economy. We can facilitate this as we have positive relationships with them and it represents an additional source of income for locals, while at the same time giving some of our participants experiences that they will never forget.

Once in Lobitos, you’ll be able to see what you’d like to do at your own discretion. Regardless of whether you do partake or not in these activities, you will have a blast.

We are not one of those organizations which imposes loads of restrictions on our participants on what you can and can’t do. We treat our volunteers and interns like adults, and so you are free to behave as one, responsibly. We will make all volunteers/interns fill in an risk assessment before joining us nonetheless, that way we ensure that you know what the risks are and what you shouldn’t do. We’ll give you a heads up on what goes down well and what doesn’t. So no need to worry too much about what you need to do in regards to health and safety and no need to worry about us wanting to “babysit” you.
