Community Support Assistant

If you’re someone who is open minded and interested in supporting the women in Tanzania then this is a great project for you.

Our program

Women in Mwanza face a range of challenges, which  include discrimination, low social status, lack of economic self-sufficiency, and greater risk of HIV/AIDS infection.

The aim of the project is to provide support to young women in developing the skills needed to carry out income-generating activities so they can provide for themselves and their families.

If volunteers are interested in promoting better opportunities for women in Tanzania, this is a rewarding project to support.

As a volunteers will work closely with local community centers, providing support to women and their families. And thier main role will be focused on providing support around management, financing and educational development to increase independence among the women and allow mothers to better support their families. Many of the women’s groups are involved in craft-making through basket weaving, sewing, tailoring and jewelry-making, and the crafts they make are then sold in order to generate income and provide for their families. Volunteers are also encouraged to create educational training materials on topics such as managing finances, vocational skills and building self-esteem.

Much of Mwanza Community in Tanzania is in need of new and improved infrastructure to enable schools and communities to function more effectively.

Your tasks

On the Community Development project volunteers are involved in initiatives directly benefiting the local communities on ilemela and Mwanza. These initiatives can involve general maintenance work within the small village schools where our teaching volunteers work.

As well as working within the schools, new community projects arise all the time, so you should expect to work on different projects in different locations during your time in Tanzania.

Tasks can include building ablution blocks, painting rooms, repairing desks and other general repair jobs. This work can be physically demanding at times as supplies often need to be loaded on and off boats. While on the Community Development project you are also able to participate and interact with locals and gain ideas for new initiatives.

Placement will depend on the skills individual volunteers have to offer, the amount of volunteers on the project and also the initiatives that are in progress at the time of placement.
