Community Worker in Childcare & Animal Care

Cape Town, South Africa show on map

Contribute for the improvement and uplifting of communities living in the township areas of Cape Town, in South Africa. Teach kids, support animal rescue, and more.

Welcome to one of the most intriguing volunteer projects offered in Africa. The Township Volunteer Program is a one-of-it's-kind project where in volunteers will get to interact with people from different African ethnicity and contribute in making the area a better place for each to live in.

Volunteers will be placed in a township named Imizamo Yethu (often referred to as Mandela Park), located in the scenic seaside of Hout Bay Valley area of Cape Town. The unique fact about this township area is that, despite being located in South Africa, it has only 30% South African citizens, and the rest of the population consists of other African nationalities including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Somalia, Ethiopia, Congo, etc. Such is the diversity of this area. This township area, though, has grown multi-folds over the period of nearly 2 decades from 3000 occupants to more than 40k people, however, many of these families still live without basic amenities such as electricity, running water and proper sanitation.

Volunteers joining the Township Program in South Africa, will mainly be partaking in two kinds of volunteering activities:
1. Childcare and Education Support
2. Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation

The area that requires exclusive attention and contribution from the volunteers is the childcare field. There are 2 main Edu-care facilities in the township – Siluncedo crèche and Siyazama crèche. These 2 projects are similar in many ways in terms of the number of children and facilities, and therefore face the same challenges, the greatest being an insufficient number of teachers. With very little financial assistance from the government, extremely inadequate teacher-child ratio, and monthly school fees of only approx. R300 per child (which many parents cannot afford), these child-care centers depend heavily on volunteers' help and donations to continue offering this essential and fundamental service to the local community and its children.

Another area of concern are the unattended stray animals in the area; mainly cats and dogs. Due to the tough economic and social situation in the area, these animals are often neglected and left to feed themselves, often leading to starvation and/or sickness.

To deal with this ever-growing problem in the community, the Domestic Animal Rescue Group (DARG) , an animal rescue and rehabilitation center, was established. It is a pro-life, non-profit organization that rescues, cares for, and sterilizes stray dogs and cats, with the hope of eventually finding new homes for them.

These animals are housed in an extensive cat garden, a cat sanctuary, outdoor and indoor dog kennel areas, as well as indoor rooms for those animals in treatment or rehabilitation. With the centre only being financially able to employ a handful of permanent staff, it depends heavily on volunteers to assist with tasks such as the cleaning and maintenance of the animal housing areas, walking the dogs, feeding, or even just spending time playing with the animals in order to reintegrate them with people.

Typical day

Volunteers will generally work from 08:30 am – 12:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

Under the Teaching Project, volunteers will be involved in following activities on a day to day basis:
  • Taking formal classes for the children (both in the classroom and out on the playground).
  • Help in cooking and feeding the kids.
  • Providing support and assistance in cleaning and other household works.
Under the Animal Rescue Project, volunteers will be involved in following activities on a day to day basis:
  • Cleaning and maintenance of the animal housing areas.
  • Walking the dogs.
  • Feeding, or even just spending time playing with the animals in order to reintegrate them with people
Volunteers commute between their project and hostel accommodation by bus. The bus (MyCiti Bus 109) departs Sea Point at 07:44 am, and the return bus departs Imizamo Yethu at 12:50 pm.
