Construction & Rebuilding Helper

Agency | GoEco

Volunteer in Nepal to help restore and build homes in a region that was heavily affected by an earthquake to help people in need.

The project

The April 2015 earthquake in Nepal had a devastating impact on both human life and property. More than 8,800 people were killed and 23,000 injured, while hundreds of thousands were displaced from their homes. While the shock and terror of the earthquake have since diminished, the need for aid and relief is stronger than ever. This need is especially strong among poor rural communities whose mud homes stood no chance during the earthquake. More than 30,000 households in the Kavre district have been destroyed or damaged and are now too dangerous to live in.

This project works to mobilize and distribute basic necessities, such as drinking water, clothing, medicine, and food to those displaced and affected by the earthquake, as well as assist with the restoration and rebuilding of homes, schools, and buildings. Volunteers will spend Monday-Friday in the Kavre District assisting with relief efforts, and Saturday-Sunday in Kathmandu.

The location

Kavrepalanchowk district (also called Kavre) is a poor, farming community situated about 40-50 kilometers from Kathmandu. This district was one of the hardest hit areas of the Nepal earthquake and it is estimated that half of the Kavre population – approximately 150,000 people – were rendered homeless by this disaster.

Kathmandu, often referred to as a “living museum” for its vast collection of shrines, temples and monasteries, is the capital and largest municipality of Nepal. The city is recognized for its many paradoxes, as it’s not uncommon to find lavish apartments next to slums, Hindu temples next to Buddhist monasteries, ancient sites next to modern buildings, and paved roads next to terraced farms. Surrounded by four major mountains, almost any locale in Kathmandu offers exquisite views of mountain peaks.
