Sun sHADe Volunteers Maldives

Coordinator for Environmental Awareness Campaign

Hoadedhoo, Maldives

Increasing awareness of environmental issues faced by the island

The project

The welfare of the environment in the Maldives is a supremely important issue, although it is often one that little is done about. Community awareness is generally low, with local people having no real knowledge of the dangers they face through issues such as climate change and waste management.

Volunteer work

Working as an environmentalist in the Maldives, your main duties will be the raising of the awareness of the local community. This may include giving presentations and designing materials such as leaflets and posters. This can include providing presentations, arranging campaigns and events to spread knowledge about a more green and waste free environment. Designing materials such as leaflets and posters are also included in the tasks.

Other activities may involve the liaising with councils on environmental matters and offering advice and guidance on the environmental effects of new developments and projects. A basic knowledge of the environment is required for this placement, but more important are a love for it and a passion for helping a community that is very much in danger from environmental problems. Some form of educational background in environment is desired but not necessary.

You may also be engaged in writing proposals for future projects. Different groups will be involved in this campaign such as schools, households and other community members. We will support you during the programme and give you assistance whenever needed. We will make sure that this experience becomes rewarding for you.

You will be working with head of projects and programs at the organisation. Under his guidance and assistance you could design the awareness materials, conduct workshops, seminars cleaning and other environmental events. The awareness session will be mainly targeted to youth, and students.

The location & culture

The island of Hoadedhdhoo is located in the Huvadhoo Atoll of the Maldives. This atoll, which is the third most southern in the Maldives, is one of the largest natural atoll in the world and is located just above the equator. Hoadedhdhoo lies on the western edge of the atoll, around 8 miles north of the equator. The island is home to around 1280 people (2006 National Census), who spend the majority of their time fishing, playing football or the traditional Maldivian sport called ‘Bashi’ and relaxing!

The inhabitants of Hoadedhdhoo are extremely friendly and provide a warm welcome to all visitors. They are grateful for the work that volunteers provide and have no trepidation in including them in their daily activities. Volunteers can get an authentic feel for the Maldivian life here and it is certainly not an opportunity to pass up!

Our volunteers stay with residents and work closely with our other volunteers or members of the community. Friendship comes easily to the people of Hoadedhdhoo and you will have no trouble with being accepted into the community. You will spend evenings and weekends with your new friends, relaxing and chatting either at the local residence or at one of the picturesque outdoor areas. The majority of people you meet will be able to hold conversations with you in English. You will most likely have the chance to experience traditional barbeques at their homes or at the beach under the starry night sky. Just imagine grilled fresh fish with sweet coconut right from the tree.

You can also spend your spare time enjoying some of the many activities on the island. Locals are huge fans of football, volleyball and Bashi – a traditional Maldivian women’s sport. You can also bring your Frisbee or Badminton equipment and engage locals in the match. If you are a person who loves water activities then you are in the right place. The ocean plays the role of a big playground.

Locals love music and they are both great musicians and dancers. Therefore, it is not rare to experience sessions full of singing, dancing and sound of Bodu Beru-traditional drums. Many locals are more than happy to learn about the place you come from. In return, they will teach you about their culture.

It is necessary to beware that Hoadedhdhoo, like the rest of the Maldives, is 100% Muslim and this plays a large role in the everyday life. Many of the islanders are traditionalists and volunteers will need to adhere to their rules and beliefs. Often this does not interfere with life, although for women there tend to be rather more restrictions. For example, clothes that expose the shoulders, knees or have a low neckline are not allowed in public areas. Acceptance of the beliefs of the islanders will play a major role in your adaptation to island life, but their warm and friendly nature should endear you to them and boundaries between different religions and cultures will be easily knocked down!

Typical day

Generally working hours will be from 9 am to 4pm, but it depending on the activities and programs conducted by you. Working hours will not be more than 5-6 hours daily, and there will be additional activities such as snorkeling, night fishing, uninhabited island trip and BBQs depending on number days you are with us and number of volunteers.

Details on Arrival

Our official will receive you at Male International Airport, and will take you to hotel in Male' where you will be transited over night. Next day local you will fly to the atoll where you volunteer. You will be received by our officials in local airport too.

Free-time activities

We offer several incredible opportunities to try and make our volunteers stays as memorable as possible:

Desert-island excursions – A real desert island experience! We drop our volunteers and local guides off on an uninhabited island in the morning, and leave you there all day! We provide everything you will need, including food, beverages, sports and snorkeling equipment to make it the perfect day out for you. Picnics on such islands are great fun, and offer volunteers an opportunity to explore, sunbathe and relax in a tropical paradise. Picnics and barbeques on an uninhabited beach, with a few good friends, are truly one of the greatest things the Maldives has to offer. The idea of exploring a completely wild island should also appeal to the adventurous side of our volunteers!

Swimming and Snorkeling – With temperatures lingering often around 30°C and humidity often surpassing the 80% mark, even murky water would look tempting… But here in the Maldives our pristine oceans are one of our proudest and most beautiful assets. Azure-blue, crystal clear water and coral reefs teeming with fish visible just below the surface of the water are trademarks of our nation. It is undeniably tempting to plunge into the ocean on a daily basis. We offer some of the best snorkeling in the world – for free! Simply grab some flippers and a mask and you’re set to go, simply step off the edge of the island. When snorkeling you will frequently find yourself staring face to face with rare tropical species such as manta rays, reef sharks, turtles or even dolphins if you are lucky. The reefs themselves are beautiful and truly are a wonder of nature!

Tours to different islands
– Most islands in the Maldives are unique and are host to different customs and sights to see. We offer tours to different islands and this really does give you a better view of what the Maldives is really like.

Fishing – Fishing, besides making up a large percentage of the country’s economy, is a favorite past-time of many of the inhabitants and most of the islanders have a passion for that! Locals and local volunteers will offer to take you fishing in the beautiful waters surrounding our island. Night fishing usually begins with a burning sunset turning into a starry sky. This is an opportunity not to be missed. Catching such a wide variety of exotic fish is an experience of a life-time!

Barbeques - Any fish caught can also be prepared and eaten locally, with evening beach barbeques (or at private houses) -almost as common as the fishing trips that precede them!

Food & Beverages
Maldives is almost 99% sea, it is not surprising that fish (mainly tuna) is the most important staple of the Maldivian diet. The cuisine found in the island nation is a mix of Arabic, Indian, Sri Lankan and Oriental influences. The ninety tourist resorts scattered throughout the islands host diverse international menus as well as traditional Maldivian dishes. Eating in Malé affords tourists the best opportunity to try real, local food and visitors should make sure to eat in the cafés, known locally as hotau.

Coconuts are a major part of many dishes in Maldives and can be served in grated form, as milk or as coconut oil which is used to deep fry foods. Favourite fish include skipjack tuna, little tunney, yellowfin tuna, frigate tuna, bigeye scad, wahoo and mahi-mahi.

Rice: While an essential part of a local meal, it is not grown here and must be imported.

Popular dishes include:

Garudhiya: a fish broth served with rice, lime, chili and onions.

Mas huni: shredded smoked fish with grated coconuts and onions. This is considered the most popular breakfast food in the country.

Fihunu mas: barbecued fish that has been basted with chili.

Hedhikaa is the local word for snacks in the islands and some of the favourites are:
• bajiya: pastry that is stuffed with fish, coconuts and onion.
• gulha: pastry balls that are stuffed with smoked fish.
• keemia: deep fried fish rolls.
• kulhi boakiba: a spicy fish cake.
• masroshi: mas huni that has been wrapped in roshi bread and is then baked.
• thelui mas: fried fish cooked with chili and garlic.

Drinks:
When visiting Maldives, it is best to stick with bottled water as this is safer and when in doubt, always ask. As the islands are an Islamic nation, the population does not drink alcohol, however, it is available in most resorts. Locals instead prefer to drink sai or tea. Raa is a traditional drink and is a toddy that has been tapped from palm trees. It is sometimes left to ferment.

Break fast, lunch and dinner will be provided at local cafe, and we will be able to cater special dietary requirement such as vegetarian. But in cas e of special dietary requirement only limited variety of food is offered.
