Dental Care Assistant

Cusco, Peru

Help put a smile on the Peruvian children and adults!

Dental students or professionals can support the provision of dental care, participating in hygiene campaigns and healthcare education. Interns will be placed in "Centros de Salud" or clinics which provide both primary and basic emergency care to low-income families.

The program

Our dental care programs need volunteer with your skills and passion for helping others! As dental health is often one of the most critically underserved healthcare fields in Peru, there are people who are in desperate need of your abilities.

In Peru, there are few opportunities for adults and children to have access to dental care and oral hygiene education. However, there are many great projects that are mobilizing skilled volunteers to maintain smiles across Cusco.

Volunteer work

For established dental professionals or students, working abroad allows for an opportunity to spread your valuable, skills and knowledge to a population that would not usually have access to them. For dental or pre-dental students, working abroad allows you to observe your field in its most basic role and to help people.

Dental interns will be placed in local dental clinics and work alongside a licensed dentist to gain experience in practical techniques such as prophylaxis, sealants, restorations, and extractions.

Opportunities may be available to participate in outreach programs in schools and rural communities during the intern's stay.

Interns will be given a level of responsibility according to their level of training and expertise
Spanish level and ability to take initiative.

**Interns are required to bring their own basic dental supplies, including white coat and instrumentals. Prior to your arrival you may be required to provide copies of your training and credentials.

Typical day

While our programs are flexible and can be fit to your requirements, an example of a typical day is as follows:

7:30 AM Breakfast with the host family

8:00 AM Volunteer leaves home and takes public transport (or in some cases walks) to the project. You will be given a plan for your work.

2:00 PM-5:00 PM Work at the project usually ends. The volunteer at this point is free to visit and explore the city. When you first arrive you will also have the city tour in the afternoon and the night tour during the evening. You may also want to spend additional time with the children at your project up until the late afternoon.

7-7:30 PM Dinner with the host family.

Details on Arrival

This program is available from mid January until mid December.

Free-time activities

On the weekend, volunteers have spare time and usually relax or take the opportunity to explore other parts of their local town and Peru. Long weekends can be taken to travel further afield such as Machu Picchu. At PV Travel we organize fun and interesting tours for our volunteers, so just let us know where you would like to go!

Accommodation
Most volunteers will stay in a homestay where they will live with a local family. Volunteers can expect to share a room with one or two other volunteers but in some homestays volunteers get their own rooms. We highly recommend staying with a family; that way you will also learn the Peruvian way of life, meet local people, eat typical food, speak the language (Spanish) and engage in local customs and traditions. Living is comfortable and all homestays have electricity and running water.
Bedroom (Double) Guest Family
Food & Beverages

all 3 meals are included. Volunteers can expect to experience a variety of flavors and meals during their homestay experience as Peruvian food is diverse. We will be glad to let the family know if you have special eating needs. Please let us know ahead of time so that we can make arrangements for you.
