Headrockdogs Rescue

Dog care and rescue supporter

Bang Saphan , Thailand show on map

You will work with 40 plus dogs in our centre and another thirty at a local temple. You will be able to interact with the dogs as well as taking care of their daily needs

When volunteering with headrockdogs rescue you will be delivering comfort and security to dogs who have suffered or been abandoned. You will get to know Thai street dogs and we will help you understand their needs and ways. You will be able to help us deal with ongoing issues such as abandonment and abuse and see how we work with the local community to try to improve and develop peoples views of these dogs. You may also get to opportunity to take some of our dogs out to meet local residents in the hope of showing them that these animals are good pets and hopefully spark some interest in our adoption program.

The aim of our program is to initially make volunteers comfortable with Thai street dogs and for the volunteer to show their love and compassion for our dogs.We want our volunteers to learn about the issues faced by our organisation so they can leave with better knowledge of dog rescue in Thailand and the challenges we face. The program is also about having fun and enjoying time with our amazing, friendly dogs.

The first job we’ll ask you to do is eye cleaning the dogs who need it.  Then you’ll progress to help treat the dogs with bad skin conditions.  Brushing and shampooing will also be a major activity.

We also give a lot of dogs vitamins in rice with fish.  This task is quite time consuming so once you feel confident with the dogs we’ll ask you to help.  Also monthly de-tick treatment and de-worming are very important tasks which you’ll be asked to help with.

If there’s any time left you can take a few dogs down to the beach which they love.  However that’s a job for long term volunteers who have got to know the dogs well.  We don’t want to lose any!

There will also be a lot of cleaning to do.  The dogs’ bed bowls need washing out regularly and the puppy pens need cleaning every day if we have puppies if we don’t they will need cleaning once a week in preparation for new comers. Plenty of cuddling and petting is also very very important.

You will work with our centre managers Thep and Verity, Thep is from Thailand and Verity is from England, they have managed the centre and cared for many temple dogs for over nine years now. You will work with other volunteers if and when we have them. The work is very rewarding, you will get to know our group of friendly dogs and hopefully grow to love them, some may be rehomed during your visit and we may need to rescue and bring in street dogs. There is always plenty of interesting work to do. All we expect from you is enthusiasm, three to five hours work each day and an open mind in return we will teach you as much as we can with our limited resources, do what we can to make your stay enjoyable and fulfilling and the dogs will give you all the love you will ever need. We ask volunteers to wear suitable dog proof clothes which will protect you against scratches when they jump up.  No skimpy shorts and tops please….. that attire is for the beach.  Also strong shoes and in the rainy season you will need a pair of boots.  These can be bought in the market.  And a hat to protect you from the sun.

Please keep your nails shortish so you don’t scratch the dogs and only essential jewellery as it can also scratch.

We are always grateful for dog loving volunteers who are willing to give up their time. If you would like to come and volunteer with us we will help you organise your trip. Please read the reviews from past volunteers on our facebook page and/or website.

We don’t charge you for coming to volunteer, we just appreciate your help.

We are situated right next to the beach and it's always easy to find great accommodation on the beach just twenty minutes walk from the centre. There's great food to be enjoyed close by and plenty of beautiful sites to visit.

Typical day

On a typical day your jobs will include cleaning up the enclosures, checking and cleaning eyes, feeding the dogs, checking for fleas and ticks, shampooing dogs, giving the puppies their vitamins and others their tablets and then a trip to the beach with the clan, if possible. And then the daily task of cleaning up dog poo. Lots of it! It's always hot so these jobs can take a good three to five hours because you will need plenty of dring breaks and everyone gets distracted by the characters in our clan.

We ask you to work 5-6 mornings a week from 8 or 9 to 1pm or 2pm.

Details on Arrival

Th best way to get to us from Bangkok is to take the sky train to the main train station (Hualumpong) and take a train to Bang Saphan Noi. We can arrange to meet you at the train station. It's best to book in advance. You can come to volunteer with us all year round.

Free-time activities

The main attraction has to be the endless sandy beach that stretches as far as the eye can see. It is fringed with coconut palms and dotted with the occasional bungalow.

Temples and Caves
Wat Tum Marong (we help look after 60 dogs here) has an impressive deep cave system with hundreds of Buddha images and a resident bat colony.

Bangsaphan Waterfalls
There are a number of waterfalls in the area these two (Sai Ku and Ka-On) are both a short drive south of Bangsaphan. There is another waterfall and swimming hole called Chai Rat just after the Khao Po service station.

Koh Talu
Koh Talu (also spelt Koh Thalu or Ko Taloo) is a private island in the Gulf of Thailand, 30 minutes boat ride from Bangsaphan. It has two beautiful resorts, unspoiled beaches and coconut palms encircling the pristine evergreen tropical rainforest covering the most of it. The shallow clear blue sea with rich marine life is the perfect choice of nature lovers for fishing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, sailing, trekking or just for relaxing.

There's lots of activities nearby. Please note we don't arrange these activities they are just what is available locally. There's islands with an abundance of natural beauty a short boat ride from the area. There's national parks and jungle to trek in and plenty of waterfalls to visit. The markets in town are great to visit and full of wonderful food.
