Then travel to Knysna, South Africa and be part of a unique volunteer experience. Help to research and conserve dolphins, whales and the coast in one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world!

Be part of an exciting experience by working in a unique marine conservation area and working towards the protection and conservation of marine life population with an Eco-tourism company. Expand your knowledge on the wonders of the ocean and these amazing creatures and share what you have learnt with the local children in the area. Teach them about the importance of the ocean and how they can help with the protection and conservation of marine life. You will see dolphins and whales near and take in the beauty of the Knysna Coast! This unique project attracts volunteers from all over the world and together for a minimum of two weeks you can work towards a great cause. If you are looking to volunteer in an area that has access to all amenities with daily communication to family and friends, fantastic restaurants and shops then this is the place for you. During your time or days off there are endless activities to keep you occupied which includes hiking, boat trips, shark cage diving and you will be near the highest bridge bungee jump in the world!

Typical day

The help of volunteers is so vital to the research of whales and dolphins and their conservation along the coast of Knysna. Many volunteers work along with the Eco-tourism company to help conserve the population of these amazing creatures and to education the public especially the local children on the importance of conservation. As a volunteer at the project, you will expand your knowledge on marine life and the ocean itself and share what you learn with the locals. Some of your responsibilities include but is not limited to:

  • Assist with coastal conservation and marine research.
  • Record daily sightings of the various species of whales and dolphins.
  • Recording recurring visits and/or migratory habits.
  • Educating the local children.
  • Act as a crew member on the boats and help with guiding.

Details on Arrival

There aren’t any specific start dates, the project is opened all year round however they close in mid-December to mid-January. They also prefer applicant arrivals to be on every second Saturday in the month!

Free-time activities

Volunteers may not have days off due to the work being around the clock however, if volunteers are granted off time from work then there are lots of opportunities to go sightseeing, shopping, experience the different culture and unique cuisine. Visit the breathtaking beaches and coastlines, swim and so much more!

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 08:30 - 15:30

Airport Pickup at Cape Town International Airport

You will arrive in beautiful Cape Town or Johannesburg where you will either catch a connecting flight to GEORGE (GRJ) or take a bus from Cape Town or Johannesburg to the project. This allows you to have a better view of the area. 

Accommodation

Volunteers will stay in a basic but clean and comfortable volunteer house with a dorm style sleeping arrangement. This house has great views over the mountains and you will have access to a communal kitchen and lounge area with TV/DVD player, hot water showers and electricity and free WiFi and computer access. There is also a barbeque (braai) area and hammocks for you to enjoy. If you need, private and family rooms are available on request.

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town. We assist you to find cheap flights to South Africa.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for South Africa provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in South Africa you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for South Africa.

You can volunteer at the project site in Cape Town/South Africa between 2 weeks and 6 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Fronteering Travel will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in South Africa.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment must be made up to 30 days before to the volunteer program starts. This payment is also securely handled by PayPal or credit card.
