Love Volunteers

Education Supporting Worker

Bamenda, Cameroon show on map

Provide essential teaching to under-resourced schools in Bamenda. Support the local education.

The program

International volunteers play a direct role in changing lives on this amazing program. Love Volunteers local partner organization in Bamenda works closely with two community schools in the town in Cameroon's northwest region.Together these schools cater for more than 200 children in the Nursery School and over 460 in the Primary School, most of whom come from poorer families who would otherwise struggle to educate all of their children. The aim for these schools is to provide a holistic approach to education so that children are also learning life skills along with academics. All lessons are taught in English and volunteers are invaluable in working with these children. Through a solid education this program aims to support these children and help them to create a better life and to break the poverty cycle. Extra teaching support is vital in classrooms with very large rolls, and which lack even basic supplies. Any teaching support given by volunteers in the schools is gratefully accepted and appreciated by teachers and students alike.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide essential teaching to under-resourced schools in Bamenda
  • Provide an educational foundation for vulnerable children to build on and break the poverty cycle
  • Improve the future prospects of the children in Bamenda
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.

How you can help

There are so many benefits for all involved from a teaching placement in Cameroon. Along with being an extremely eye-opening and rewarding experience for international volunteers, the experience they gain will give them great teaching and life experience to bring back home. It will also help the local teachers themselves, who gain greatly from the contact with native English speakers, and this exposure, along with the practice they gain can also enhance the teachers’ career prospects. The children themselves of course thrive under the teachings of native English speaking teachers, as all classes are taught in English. Having additional teaching support and attention vastly improves the children’s education levels. Volunteers in Cameroon can contribute to the delivery of a range of subjects, including English, sports, computer skills, and basic life skills for those students with disabilities. Whilst formal qualifications and TEFL experience are always beneficial, volunteers on this program do not need to possess formal teaching qualifications to participate. Once orientation is completed, and volunteers are familiar with their surroundings, they may be allowed to teach on their own. Otherwise, their role will be to simply assist local teachers with their daily duties.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Teach children in a variety of subjects and assist local teachers
  • Play sports and other games with the children
  • Work with students on projects and activities

Bamenda (also known as Abakwa or Mankon Town) is a city in and capital of the North-West Region of Cameroon. The city has a population of only 500,000 people, and is located 366km north-west of the official Cameroonian capital of Yaoundé.

Bamenda is known for its cool climate and scenic hilly location. The mountainous countryside around Bamenda is dotted with waterfalls and tea plantations and is ideal for hiking. Many of the city's inhabitants are English-speaking, and Cameroonian Pidgin English is the main language spoken in the shops and on the streets of Bamenda.

Tourism in general is limited in Cameroon, making Bamenda a wonderful place to experience ‘The Real Africa’, and those who venture there will find a nation of remarkable diversity, from its varying landscapes of tropical rainforests and beaches, mountains and desert, to its assortment of people and cultures. National parks and reserves lay claim to some of the richest flora and fauna in Africa! Awesome!

Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated throughout their stay in Bamenda in a safe and comfortable shared volunteer house. The house is basic but the rooms are spacious and have their own bathroom. Volunteers will generally share a room, but it will depend on the number of people taking part. The bathrooms have western toilets and a mixture of running water and bucket showers. The house also has TV, Wi-Fi (can be unreliable) and a kitchen that volunteers can use if they wish.

Please keep in mind that living conditions in Cameroon are not luxurious. They do have electricity, but load shedding is common so you should expect the power to be off for a period each day. The accommodations have running water but hot water is only available if boiled. Heating and air-conditioning is also uncommon so it is very important to be well prepared for your trip. Although the accommodation is basic, this is part of the challenge and experience of volunteering in a developing country. With a little patience, and a flexible attitude, you will quickly get used to your new surroundings.

Guesthouse
Food & Beverages
Three meals a day will be provided during your stay. Your hosts will provide you with a selection of local foods during your volunteer period, but you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. It is very common for Cameroonians to eat things like rice, stew, beans, corn and bread. The different cuisine may take some adjusting but is part of life in Cameroon.
