Greenkarst English Club

English Club Teacher

Dong Van, Viet Nam

In this role you will help to organise English lesson plans and activities, and help the staff at our restaurant to improve their English speaking skills.

Why this program is important

We feel that this social program is hugely important for the people of Dong Van. In this area there is are a wide variety of different communities, including Vietnamese people, Hmong people and Tay people (to name just a few!) This means that while Dong Van is quite small, it is also very diverse, and there are at least 17 different languages spoken here! This is great, but also means that it can be difficult for people from different communities to communicate effectively with one another, and it can be even more difficult for them to interact with tourists and visitors who come to Dong Van.

In addition, many of the languages spoken here are not commonly spoken in other parts of Vietnam or the world, meaning that the people living in these areas are not able to access opportunities which may be more open to them if they spoke more commonly used languages. Therefore, we believe that teaching English to people in these areas will be hugely beneficial to them and lead to them having more options in what they can do and where they can go in life.

Your role as a volunteer

In your role as an English teacher for Green Karst English Club you will help us to plan lessons and make activities and games for our students. The ability of our students is very varied, and the age ranges from young children to adults so lesson plans can cover English basics such as the alphabet, numbers, and greetings as well as more difficult topics such as tenses and vocabulary building. Games which have been popular for English practice include 'match the pairs' and bingo!

We have lessons two or three times a week in our restaurant, and we ask that you also take part in presenting them and speaking to the students, although we will also help with this and will provide translation for you as well as contributing with our own activities as well. We also hope that you will help us to organise and plan lessons and trips to nearby villages, so that we can begin to teach the people in these communities as well.

The main role you will have as a volunteer is helping with lesson planning, as although me and my wife can speak English well, we need help to think of new ideas and ways to make topics interesting! Another important role that our volunteers can help with is helping to promote the program and increase our online presence as this is something we don't have great skills at doing!

In addition to creating lesson plans for our English club we also hope that you can work with our restarurant staff to help them improve their English for no more than a couple of hours a day. They are most interested in learning English which can be of use to them in the restaurant, but are also keen to become more proficient in conversational English.

Who you will be working with

Volunteers will work with me and my wife most, but will also work with our restaurant staff who are learning English and who can also help with organising and taking part in lessons and trips to villages. There may also be other volunteers here working, so all volunteers can work together to set up activities! During classes, you will be working with a range of adults and children.

What we expect from you

We expect our volunteers to be enthusiastic and sociable with members of the class as well as with us and our friends, and to be willing to spend time getting to know the people of Dong Van. In addition, we expect volunteers to set aside a few hours a day to either plan and take part in lessons, or to help teach our staff English.

What you can expect from us

In return, our volunteers can expect us to provide three meals a day, comfortable living arrangements and a warm welcome. We will also give volunteers several hours of free time a day, and 2 days off per week to enjoy Dong Van. You are welcome to ask us for any help, and borrow our motorbike. We do not expect volunteers to bring any special equipment.

Typical day

On a typical day you can arrive at the restaurant in the morning and we will provide breakfast.

If there is no lesson planned for that evening then you can sit with our restaurant staff and work on their English speaking skills for an hour or two.

We usually have an early lunch and then you might do a little more work with the staff before being most of the afternoon off to enjoy Dong Van and the area.

We have dinner at around 7pm, and then you may be asked to help a little in the restaurant if we are busy, or if it is not busy we often just spend the evening relaxing together and invite friends to join us.

On days when we have a lesson scheduled, you will spend the morning planning this lesson, and then work with the staff on their English if there is time afterwards. Then you will be given some free time after lunch in the afternoon and come back to help with the lesson in the evening after dinner.

Details on Arrival

We are open for volunteers all year round and you will be very welcome wheneber you come! There are buses to Dong Van from Ha Giang, amd we are more than happy to help you arrange these.

If you are coming to Dong Van by plane, then the nearest airport is in Hanoi and we can give you information on this should you need it.

Free-time activities

Dong Van is situated in a beautiful area, surrounded by mountains and valleys. In your free time you can go walking and hiking in the surrounding areas, and use motorbikes to visit Ma Pi Leng, Meo Vac and Lung Cu.

There is a very popular market on Sundays which we really recommend that you go to! There are also many villages around which are great for a day trip to, we can organise this and go with you or help arrange it for you if you would rather go alone. The Hmong King palace is also worth a visit.
