The volunteer position:

At CWF, we teach localized English. This means that we only teach our Cambodian students things that are relevant to them. No Halloween or 4th of July celebrations for example, but Ancestors’ Day or January 7th which are two important days in Cambodian culture and History – the former being religious and the latter marking the end of the Khmer Rouge regime. No strawberries or blueberries, but tropical fruit like snake fruit or jackfruit – basically what our students buy and eat! Our Debate class includes topics that students can relate to in their daily life such as the benefits of road dividers to regulate Phnom Penh traffic or their workplace, like reducing the number of Cambodian bank holidays. It’s also a great way to delve into Cambodian culture through teaching English. Our teachers engage in conversations with our students about their daily lives and strives, as well as life in general in Cambodia.

Another key differentiating factor is that 60% of our profits help fund projects for our beneficiaries – local partner NGO’s doing amazing work in rural areas of Cambodia. A recent example is 1001fountaines which is one of CWF’s newest beneficiaries. 1001fountaines aims to provide clean drinking water to poor rural families through their water kiosks. In 2017, CWF will support more than 5000 schoolchildren through 1001fountaines and that contribution from CWF will secure their access to clean and safe drinking water for an entire school year! This is only but one example.

This is what makes us stand out from the crowd! We generate profits through our language classes for our project funding. It is a great mechanism that allows transfer of funds from the city – where money is concentrated – back to the funding rural development projects – where money or investments are scarce.

The school is a low ressource school, but we provide a curriculum and teaching materials. All classrooms are equipped with chairs for the students and the teacher, a whiteboard, a desk and an AC. Our teachers work together as a team of internationals and are closely supervised by our academic manager. Teachers are expected to deliver 4.5 hours of English lessons daily.

Semester start dates are every November, February, May and August.

What we offer:

The program is no-fee, however, teachers are required to cover their own living expenses during their time with us. We have a Teacher House available and we can also help to arrange independent accommodation for teachers that would prefer this option. Cost of living in our house is US$835 for the three months. This includes rent, all bills and 3 meals per day (Monday-Friday). There is a cook on site, as well as local staff to help and support our teachers!

We also offer as part of our program: full training and support for teachers including classroom observations and feedback sessions; an 8 day Orientation program with all meals included and a trip out to see one of our rural development projects; a professional development workshop series for teachers; a free Khmer cooking class; free Khmer language lessons each week; and a bicycle to get around the city! Throughout the semester, we also organize a range of social activities such as a trip to a Khmer boxing show and a karaoke night. Airport pickup is provided as well.

Upon completion we are happy to provide you with a letter of recommendation and a certificate of completion.

Typical day

Morning routine

Maybe you are an early bird, but the sun in Cambodia wakes up before you do. Outside gets hotter by the minute, as Phnom Penh wakes up with you and the streets come to life!
If you are in the volunteer house, a delicious meal is waiting for you downstairs, prepared by our awesome cook Mony. You won’t be able to resist for long! After enjoying your awesome breakfast, it’s time to get ready for your day and prepare for your classes.
If you’re not in the volunteer house, you can enjoy the tranquility at home or be Khmer and head to the Russian Market to buy fruits, vegetables and meats. Navigate your way inside the Russian Market where early every morning a Khmer woman cooks a rice omlette full of meat and vegetables. She gives you a huge serve with sauce and a cold tea, and this one dollar breakfast perfectly suits the heartwarming smile of the cook. You are now ready to take on the day!

Prepare your classes

You don’t need to be stuck in an office preparing for classes! Grab your papers and books, the CWF curriculum and a pen; maybe even your computer; and then head outside! You can walk for 5 minutes in any direction and find so many great little cafes. Choose one, go inside and order a cafe latte. Find a seat at the great table on the upper floor, away from everyone else and close to the windows. You are now ready to start preparing for your afternoon classes! The coffee that has just arrived will definitely help!

Teaching!

By now it’s time for class! Your students will be made up of different ages, social classes and backgrounds, making for a wonderful and interesting dynamic in the classroom! They are just waiting for you to guide them, motivate them and inspire them to learn English! You will have 3 – 4 classes of 1 hour – 1.5 hours each. You’ve done a lot to prepare for this moment, including all of the development workshops led by the Education Managers. which were fun and full of teaching techniques and strategies. Your objective now? Get to know your students! Listen to them, answer their questions, and most importantly, encourage them to talk! The more they talk, the better! And don’t forget the CWF rule – English only in the classroom!

Rest or go for a walk!

It’s 8pm. You’ve been teaching for 4.5 hours, but you’ve had so much fun! Your energy is a little depleted, but you’re not ready to settle down for the night just yet! You might want to eat, but there’s no rush with so much street food available until late. Have a shower and go for a walk around Toul Tompoung. Maybe you’d like to try one of the awesome foreign restaurants in the area? And of course they are so much cheaper here! A great way to celebrate your first day as an English teacher in Cambodia!
