International Experience

English Teacher in Public Schools

falconara, Italy show on map

Teach English to the students of the elementary and middle schools in Falconara Marittima and live with a local Italian host family

The project

The program aims to face the huge Italian problem of the low level of the English language, the incapacity of communicating with different cultures and the low interest of the everage population about this topic. We strongly believe that this program can modify the motivation of young students and the effort they put into study a new Language, since through the help of a real volunteer in the classroom, they can start understand that English is not just a subject in school, but a way to communicate with people coming from other parts of the World.

Volunteer work

The volunteer will work with other Italian teacher as a teaching assistant at a local school for up to 15 hours/week and tutor your host family for 5 hours/week while living with them. International Experience collaborates with many schools from kindergarten to high schools who have extreme need to be helped by a fluent English speaker, whose role could vary from leading the classroom in English activities to assist local English teachers during their lessons. This program also gives candidates the chance to enhance their career and resume with a real international classroom experience.

What we expect from you

There is no need to bring special material but any teaching supply is welcome (can be discussed directly with the Teachers).
We expect that the volunteer does her/his best and gets ready to speak in front of the Italian students about topics that will be defined from the Italian Teachers. The volunteer will have support from the local coordinator teacher and also from the International Experience's staff (by email/phone) during every step of the Exchange. We will also provide the volunteer with an online orientation course, very helpful to have a general idea of the experience they will live.

  • teach in Italian schools for up to 15 hours/week, Monday to Friday
  • Tutor the host family in conversational English for 5 hours/week, , Monday to Friday
  • Respect the host family's rules and habits

Falconara Marittima. The school has several buildings and the volunteer will be living with a nice host family (selected by the school) who lives in the school area. We can not provide the detailed information of the host family at this stage because we have to select, along with the school, the proper host family according to the volunteer profile. In certain cases, when the period is longer than 7 weeks, the hospitality can be split in 2 different families. The italian family usually likes to involve the volunteer into their daily routine, expecially sharing the meals with him/her, and they treat the volunteer as a family member.

Who can participate:

We are looking for candidates with an outgoing personality, interested in the education sector and able to face the challenge of teaching in a different school system.

It is very important for the project that the volunteers are English native speakers or with a very similar level (which often happens after living several years in an English speaking country). Previous teaching/tutoring experience or a TEFL certificate are very helpful but not mandatory

Typical day

The volunteer will wake up with the host family and have breakfast with them, then will head to school where he/she will help the Italian Teachers teach English to the students for roughly 3 hours/day, Monday to Friday. The volunteer hours may not be consecutive, but the teachers always try to do their best to schedule them as close as possible. The precise schedule will be given to the volunteer before the arrival.

During the activities, the volunteers' role could vary from reading out loud in English to showing power point presentations about certain topics (agreed with the Italian teacher). The volunteer can also invent easy crosswords or word search, as well as competitions such "jeopardy" , and so on..

Lunch time is sometimes at the school restaurant and sometimes with the host family, depending on the host family's work commitments. The rest of the day can be spent with the host family (when the family members are home) or exploring the surrounding area.

Free-time activities

Please note that the free time activities are not included nor organized by International Experience, but around Falconara and especially in Ancona, there are several activities organized by local associations. The host families are always willing to help the volunteers to get further information about activities they are interested in. Falconara Marittima is a seaside resort on the Adriatic coast, in Italy located 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) north of Ancona, in Marche.

Falconara developed around a castle. In the second half of the 16th century it was bought by the noble family of Bourbon del Monte. In the 19th century they were still present as owners. The Castle of Falconara, together with those of Rocca Priora and of Castelferretti, represented a defence system around Ancona, which controlled the territory and demanded bridge toll for crossing over the river Esino and had many other functions.Falconara Marittima's mail attraction is a lond sandy beach where during the summer people practice sports such as beach volleyball, beach tennis and beach soccer. Falconara has also a big zoo.Falconara marittima is really close to Ancona, a bustling port on the eastern coast of Italy facing the Adriatic Sea.

Furthermore, Ancona is also the capital of the Province of Ancona and has a current population of 101,000. Ancona benefits from superb weather and has some fantastic beaches serviced by some world class hotels. Furthermore, the whole port area has a fantastic combination of modern facilities and historical buildings such as the Arco di Traiano and the Mole Vanvitelliana. Additionally, this city has some fantastic squares, historical monuments and museums, plus a host of fine restaurants and bars. If you are looking for an exciting and fun packed escape on the Adriatic coast, Ancona is the place to visit!

Ancona has an extensive harbour and port and this is a fantastic place to walk through to see the beautiful range of ships and commercial freighters. At the western edge of the port is the Marina – here you can find a host of gorgeous fishing boats, sailing boats and yachts, together with a series of restaurants. As you progress further east, you can pass the immense shipyard and commercial shipping sector that is always a hive of activity.

On the coast you can find the delightful Portonovo Bay.This section of coastline has several amazing beaches with great facilities – on the western side are the main beach and the grand lake, and on the eastern side are a smaller beach and the Church of Santa Maria di Portonovo. The coastline here is spectacular – the forests stretch down to the beaches, and golden sands meet with the warm seas.Portonovo really is a great place to visit if you want to relax and escape the busy city. There are several car parks and plenty of restaurants and cafes if you need refreshments
