Volunteers will assist local teachers in English classes for students between 3 and 18

About the Program

In response to the Cambodian Government’s urgent appeal to increase bi-lingual training and Early Childhood Education opportunities for children in rural areas, Family Care Cambodia opened a Community Learning Center in a rural district of Kampong Speu.  Illiteracy, early drop-out rates and lack of early childhood education for rural children remains one of the greatest social challenges in Cambodia.  At present approximately 120 children from the surrounding villages are enrolled in our daily English, computer and preschool classes.

In a spacious compound  of Krang Jaek district, located about 2 hours drive from Phnom Penh, we have built a 4 classroom school building, library, meeting hall, office, soccer field and playground. We recently completed the construction of 4 guest rooms on the project site, each with private bathroom, to accommodate teaching staff, volunteers and interns. The resident school directors Mr. Chea Chan Raksa and his wife, Mrs. Heng Thida, will act as your host family and provide any needed assistance.

Statistically, only 1 in 4 rural Cambodian children have access to sanitation facilities and 1 in 2 have access to clean water. Therefore as a priority, our Community Learning Center has student lavatories with running water. Clean, bottled drinking water is delivered daily.

 Your Role as a Volunteer

Volunteers will assist in teaching English and preschool classes. This will include conversation, reading, writing and listening comprehension. In the preschool classes educational games, prewriting exercises and learning through play activities are employed. There are also opportunities to be involved in private tuition and remedial help for certain students. Volunteers will help organize outdoor sports and games and monitor recess and break times. All volunteers would be expected to help maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene and lead by example in keeping classrooms and outdoor areas tidy and free of garbage or litter.

The classes run from 7:30-10:30 each morning and from 1:00- 4:00 each afternoon. Evening classes for older students start at 5:00 until 7:00 pm. The school is open from Monday to Friday for students aged 3 - 19. Volunteers will be integrated to various classes depending on their ability, experience and preference. Each volunteer will be partnered with an English speaking, Khmer staff in each of the classes.

Meals are served three times a day for all staff at the Center’s dining hall. Electricity and WiFi are available. Weekends are free, allowing volunteers the time to relax and visit other parts of the country.

Applicants should be in good physical and mental health. Volunteers are expected to respect and adapt to the local culture in their appearance and manners, and to act professionally in their interactions with students and staff. Dress code for teaching is smart casual. Shorts or revealing clothing are not acceptable for teaching hours. The weather is warm to hot all year round, so lightweight clothing is advised. Regarding tattoos, as the site location is a conservative, rural village, it is preferable that large, visible tattoos on arms, legs and neck be covered by clothing during teaching hours. The same holds true for body piercings, other than earrings

 What you should bring along

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own insect repellent, rain poncho or umbrella, electronic devices, and any school supplies or teaching materials that they can. Any special dietary needs like supplements, medication or special foods will be the responsibility of the individual.

Details on Arrival

You can obtain a Cambodian visa in your home country, prior to traveling or online. You can also obtain a visa at the airport upon arrival. Bring 4 ID size photos and fill out the application at the visa counter, which is clearly marked.

After you pass through Immigration, Baggage Claim and Customs you will proceed to the arrivals area outside of the airport. If you wish to get a local sim card for your phone, there are kiosks there.
