English Teaching Experience

Cajamarca, Peru show on map

Agency | GoEco

This program aims to provide affordable and accessible English classes to local Peruvian children. Volunteers will be actively involved in the practicing of English.

The program

In many cases, the standard of English teaching in the schools in Peru is quite poor and does not give students the opportunity to attain real proficiency in the language.

This English program you will be assisting at is run at the Primary and Secondary schools, based in Cajamarca. Volunteers are needed to help the program grow and progress, as the goal over the next 10 years is for all high school graduates to speak and understand basic English. Volunteers will be actively involved in encouraging and inspiring their learners, ensuring they are confident and articulate.

Volunteers on this program will be teaching at local Primary or Secondary schools. The volunteers input at these schools are invaluable in supporting the language learning of local Peruvian children.

Your Contribution

Volunteers will only be expected to teach for 3-4 hours a day, either in the morning or the afternoon. The remainder of the day will be dedicated to teaching preparation.

Your responsibilities as a volunteer will include:

  • Preparation of class material and exercises
  • Conducting English classes in a varied and dynamic way
  • Playing games, singing songs, watching movies - making English fun
  • Observing classes of other volunteers / teachers to evaluate them

The Location

Peru, known for its incredible cultural heritage sites, such as the renowned Machu Picchu, is the third largest country in South America. Peru is geographically diverse, with a variety of landscapes, climates, and ecosystems. This makes it possible to go surfing at its northern beaches one day, and hiking in its vast mountains the next.

Typical day

After breakfast, you will be transported to a nearby village by minibus for your teaching placement (all locations are within a 30 minute drive from the accommodation). From 8:30 am to 12:00 pm you will teach English classes, there will be a short coffee break in between.

Lunch will be from 12:45 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by class preparation for the following day.

After 7:30 pm, you’ll have time to eat dinner, relax, and hang out with fellow volunteers and teachers. You will volunteer from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays you can spend your time as you wish.

Free-time activities

This project is located in Los Baños del Inca, a quiet location near the northern Andes city of Cajamarca known for its natural thermal springs, breath-taking mountain views and relaxing atmosphere. The location provides the best of both worlds with its proximity to both natural wonders such as the Andes Mountains and Amazon Rainforest, and the bustling commercial center of Cajamarca. There is also a rich Incan history to explore, as the city is known for the Battle of Cajamarca where the Inca Empire fell.
