Sapa O'Chau Social Enterprise

English teaching for ethnic minority

Sapa, Vietnam show on map

This volunteer program is an opportunity to engage with the local disadvantaged minority youth of North Vietnam through volunteering as a basic English teacher.

Our English volunteer program helps our local ethnic minority youth to break away from poverty. The English proficiency that we provide to them helps them by opening up new job opportunities that they otherwise would not be able to access.  Over the years, we have helped hundreds of young people, all thanks to the dozens of past volunteers.

We have a large variety of English levels amongst our students, from basic to intermediate.  Our students range from 16 to 20 years old. Class sizes vary depending on the number of available volunteers at the time.  The expected weekly dedication is about 30 hours/week but could be less if enough volunteers are on hand. We welcome both professional teachers and volunteers who are fluent in English.  Our teaching programs are not structured in a long-term fashion.  We do not have a year-long plan, because our student's availability changes very often. This is due to needing to go back to their villages to help out with their farming responsibilities. Our expectation for teachers is to assess the students level of English at the start of their volunteering and adapt lesson plans to suit their specific needs.  Nonetheless, we can supply reports from previous teachers to help with ideas.

Typical day

At the start of every week, we will review the teaching program with you. Teaching schedules are usually 5 hours/day for 6 days.  The usual teaching times are from 8-11am and 2-4pm.  Alternatively, it could also be 7-9pm assisting the students who are attending high school.  The rest of the day, you are welcome to assist us with anything you think you could be helpful for in our social enterprise.  But you are also welcome to take some time out for yourself.
