Environmental Protection Volunteer

Help protect a natural reserve by helping with general maintenance and working in an organic garden. Experience Ecuador's incredible biodiversity!

The Project

This project was established in 2009, and its area extends over 15 hectares in the transition zone of a mountain rainforest and the tropical Andes. It is located in the Pichincha region, which is well-known by international biologists and researchers for its breathtaking wildlife and vegetation. The project is a few kilometers away from San Miguel des los Bancos. No public transportation arrives directly to the station, so most arrive by foot or car.

The station is located in one of THE biodiversity hotspots in Ecuador, which makes the site home to a wide variety of animal inhabitants as well as different plants and trees. There are over 228 different types of birds, monkeys, pumas, and other mammals living on the land where the project takes place.

Your Work

As a volunteer, you will be working outdoors every day. This means that you should be willing and able to do the physically demanding labor that the project demands. In addition, volunteers should bring a good amount of team spirit, which is vital when creating a fun work environment. Your exact work schedule and tasks will be told to you onsite by the project’s management team. The tasks vary depending on workload and weather.

On a typical day, you can expect to keep the station clean and well maintained, expand trails and clear trail paths, take care of the organic garden (the major food supply of the project), and take part in environmental education lessons for visitors and tours.

If you have any other skills or ideas you would like to bring to the team or project, feel free to do so. New ideas and suggestions are always welcome!
