Environmental Volunteer

Join the wide variety of ongoing projects. We have to combat deforestation and promote social development, or come armed with your own idea!

Iracambi is one of a number of small non-profits working to conserve the priceless resources of the forest while improving the economic situation of the local people. Situated in the mountains of Minas Gerais, on the borders of the Serra do Brigadeiro State Park, this is your base to volunteer your time and talents, expand your horizons (and ours), and participate in the many exciting opportunities available to you here at Iracambi.

Our researchers and volunteers, supported by the local community, work to better understand the factors that lead to forest degradation and restoration. If you have a great idea and special skill, let us know and let’s see where your talents can best be put to work. If you would prefer to join our wide variety of ongoing projects we can promise you won’t be bored.

We are looking for enthusiastic, flexible, self-motivated people who really want to make a real contribution to our endeavour.

We have an international outlook but a local output and welcome people from around the globe to join us and help us do our part – get in touch to see how you can get involved in saving forests and changing lives!

Free-time activities

Set in the mountains of Minas Gerias and bordering a State Park, Iracambi is a great base for plenty of activities. For example, there is plenty of hiking - either in our own rainforest trails or in the countryside around us. Groups of volunteers may arrange trips further afield, such as to Ouro Preto, Rio de Janeiro or a famous monastery where wolves can be found, or simply take trips into the local village for food and drink, play sports or camp out under the stars at Iracambi!

What's included?
We charge $800 per volunteer per month, to cover operational costs of housing someone in the rainforest! For you this means a bed in a shared cabin with hot water,  a cleaner once a week, 3 very ample meals a day (additional items, such as beer and ice cream can be purchased very cheaply), and good wifi access.
What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.

No worries, Volunteer World supports you in raising funds, checking your visa regulations and travel insurance. We also assist you in finding the cheapest flights for your journey.

The main house and private houses have double bedrooms with single or bunk beds, and their own bathrooms. Each house also has its own living space, which in the main house includes a library and hammocks. All our houses have running water, hot showers and electricity, and we provide bedding (sheets and blankets).

Food & Beverages

Our excellent cook Carminha serves 3 meals a day in the resturant she owns. Breakfast usually consists of bread, cake, biscuits, fresh cheese, fruit and coffee. Lunch and dinner consist of beans and rice with an assortment of side dishes. The food at Iracambi is very good, but as it is sustainably sourced from the local area and is seasonal variety can be limited. Carminha is also very accommodating for vegetarians - meat is not served at every meal, and there will always be a veggie option.
