Though rescuing is a major objective of the project, they also have another key role which is grooming, caring and nurturing the animals back to their stronger selves. when the animals are fully healed, they then heal and give inspiration to the lives of abused children. All the while you will live in this amazing area of California!

The Project is very interested in having dedicated and committed volunteers to assist with the many tasks and activities at the sanctuary. For a stay of 4 weeks or more you’ll not only have the chance of working with horses but also working with a wide range of other animals such as; donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, llamas, peacocks, emus, cats and dogs. The project also prefers their volunteers to have an all-rounded experience therefore, you may also be tasked with; office work, grounds work, filling in the barnyard, assisting with field trips, and helping with any events or rescues happening at the time. The work can be physically demanding and it is by no means an easy ‘Holiday Option’!  It can be a bit challenging but the feeling that comes after is rewarding! Come now and work towards this worthwhile cause!

Volunteers will volunteer alongside local staff who will train you as well as international and local volunteers.

This is Why
  • Work hands on with a wide range of animals at our Barn Sanctuary located in California!
  • Live with an American host family and expand your English skills.
  • Be part of a team dedicated to the welfare of animals and children!
  • Great opportunity to explore California!
As a volunteer at the project you will need to be able to work in the outdoor California heat and be willing to learn how to handle the animals. Animal care would include food preparation, cage cleaning, habitat and tank construction or maintenance, and other medical responsibilities as appropriate to the skills learned by the intern.

This project is located in southern California, the nearest town is only a 19 min drive away from the project and should be even relatively closer to your accommodation. On days off, take the opportunity to visit and enjoy the park, the city and all it has to offer! You will be about 1 drive from the beautiful beaches of Malibu and about 40 minutes from all the glamour and fame of L.A. and Hollywood!

Typical day

Volunteers are the back bone of the organization and therefore plays a vital role in achieving the project’s goal of caring and giving the much-needed love to horses, cows and other animals that have suffered severe abuse, neglection or are too old. The Project focuses a lot on rehabilitating these animals and once they are healed they then in turn heal and inspire the lives of the children that suffered similar fates. As a volunteer, you will at times get your hands dirty. If you are uncertain of what to do, you can ask an experienced volunteer or the coordinator for assistance.

Your responsibilities will vary on a day to day basis. The project likes to have their interns have a well-rounded experience. Therefore, you may be involved in:
  • Office Work- this includes; filing, data entry, social media, etc.
  • Ground Work
  • Filling in the Barnyard (that is; keeping the barnyard clean and hanging out with the animals)
  • Assisting the team when the project is open to the public
  • Assisting on Field Trips
  • Assisting with any rescues that the project may have at that time
  • Grooming, feeding, caring and nurturing the animals
  • Assisting with any errands that the project may need help with off the project site.
