Trama Textiles

Fashion Design Assistant

Quezaltenango, Guatemala show on map

Create new products using the traditional textiles and weavings of our 400+ women we work with in Guatemala. Help us provide fair wages to our weavers through fashion.

Fashion and textile designers needed to create new products for Trama Textiles, utilizing textiles created by the 400+ women we work with. Many clients come to us with an idea of a product they would like to sell, and our volunteers work with the client to create the product, incorporating traditional Mayan textiles and garments. We incorporate upcycled materials, and we strive to have an ethical cooperation, using natural materials and fair wages with our weavers. Our volunteers also create new products for our Etsy page, and brainstorm new ways to use traditional materials in Guatemala.

Trama Textiles supports over 400 weavers in Guatemala. These women create traditional, handwoven pieces every day, and our new products help us share with the world the work they have done, and in turn provides a steady income for these women. Trama Textiles provides fair wages for the women we work with, which can only be done through creating modern products that incorporate Mayan tradition, while still creating modern products that can be used in the everyday lives of our customers. We strive to include a cultural background with our products, showing our customers that there’s more to the product than meets the eye. The Guatemalan culture is very rich, and is unfortunately being lost as time goes on. Through working with traditional Guatemalan weavers, we hope to maintain that tradition and culture through our products. These values are important  for us to include in our voice in social media, and in our branding while selling our products.

We love having volunteers with a wide range of talents and skills, so we are very open to creating a position for you that fits your skills, as well as the needs of Trama Textiles. Daily, you will will work our other volunteers and collaborate to create your products. We have other volunteers working in social media, writing, buisiness, and photography. There are many opportunities to work with these fellow volunteers to share what Trama Textiles is working on with our followers and customers. You will also work with our President and Vice President of the organization on a daily basis. These women know the weavers first hand, and have a vast knowledge of the cultural background of the products our weavers create. This provides a great opportunity to practice your Spanish’s language skills, and connect with locals.

We expect our volunteers for this position to create your own products, as well as work with our clients to help them create their products. While creating products, volunteers are expected to design with a cultural perspective in mind. Our weavers are not merly employees, but women that we work with side by side to provide fair wages and better living conditions for their families. We are looking for volunteers that are interested in genuinely getting to know the culture of Guatemala, and humbly striving to represent the culture to the best of their ability through their products. Volunteers work from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm regularly, but changes can be made to accommodate to your needs. It is helpful to bring your own computer or IPad and camera, scissors, and tape measure,  but we do have a computer available to use here if you do not have one. We also provide sewing machines.

Additionally we can always use help in our tienda, distributing local publicity in cafes/bars/restaurants/volunteer organizations around Quetzaltenango, and other projects. Please get in touch if you're planning on a trip to Xela and we'll work with you to find a great opportunity to help!

Volunteers also have the opportunity to learn the traditional back-strap weaving method with Guatemalan weavers while there are here. Volunteers create scarves, table runners, and other textiles!

Typical day

Daily, volunteers work in the trama Textiles office from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. Volunteers work on their individual projects, as well as meet every Monday to share what they are working on and collaborate. In the afternoons, volunteers are free to work on a weaving project, take Spanish classes, or other activities.
