Field Studies at Wildlife Center

Research the local wildlife and plants, assisting guides on tours, maintaining trails.

The project

The Wildlife Refuge Center is located close to the city of Heredia, near the Braulio Carrillo National Park. With 140 acres, the Refuge Center is hosted by secondary and primary cloud forests, with the topographical area consisting of rolling hills, steep cliffs, springs, waterfalls, and a diverse variety of trees, orchids, and birds. The area is a hotspot for hiking because of its rich wildlife and great views. The goal of the centre is to maintain this beauty of the Costa Rican nature.

The center allows people to see how important it is to protect our environment, allowing many schools and visitors to come and participate in investigations helping people understand the nature of Costa Rica so they can also help protect its nature. 

The center has many different programs which allow vistors to have an insight into the Costa Rican wildlife. Guided tours through the center give the posibility to admire waterfalls, local wildlife, and rare plants. The center also offers free classes on ecosystems to help the local community understand the importance of it. Also scientists from all across the world come here to conduct studys on animals and plants. 


Your work

On a day to day basis your main tasks will be out in the rainforest, this will include collecting data and recieving information for the investigation you are helping with or conducting. You gain skills in fieldwork and data collection, which helps you in future investigations and also helps the rainforest. 

Other projects where extra hands are greatly utilized include grounds maintenance and facility infrastructure updates,you may also be asked to take vistors on tours and answer any questions. 

While collecting data and learning about this fragile ecosystem, volunteers will also experience a sucessful model of conservation which allows maintain the stunning wildlife in Costa Rica.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s).
Language Skills
You need to speak Spanish (intermediate level)

No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 09:00 - 16:00

Free-time activities

There are many different activites to choose from, such as going to the waterfalls in the parks and discovering swimming pools, a lot of visitors hike around the forest to see the amazing views.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.

No worries, Volunteer World supports you in raising funds, checking your visa regulations and travel insurance. We also assist you in finding the cheapest flights for your journey.

You will live in the volunteer house which is part of the center. There are bunk beds in 3 bedrooms with modern bathrooms and showers. You will usually be paired with people from around the world, so it is a great way to meet new people from different cultures.

You can volunteer at the project site in San Rafael de Heredia/Costa Rica between 2 weeks and 25 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. South America Inside will tell you your final price during your application process.
Average Fees
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with South America Inside during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
