Forestry and Wildlife Conservation

Mahajanga, Madagascar

Agency | Global Nomadic

Work on various environmental conservation projects, such as lemur protection, beach cleanups and awareness campaigns and get to know the amazing island of Madagascar.

The country

Madagascar is a rich and colourful country, it was one of the last major landmasses on Earth to be colonized by humans. The island has undergone different evolutionary processes due to a cataclysmic earthquake which separated Madagascar from Africa and allowed for many life forms to change little if at all over the course of millions of years. The first settlers found plentiful resources of food, almost no predators and an abundance of wildlife when they first arrived on the island. Even though many species have disappeared since, the dense rainforests are still home to over 100 exotic species of animals which are unique to Madagascar including lemurs, dwarf hippos, giant tortoises, ten-feet tall elephant birds and many more. Settlers from Indonesia, Arab and Persian traders and migrants from Africa arrived at different times and although they lived in tribes, they avoided segregation. Their coexistence and fusion have produced a beautiful and remarkably uniform society which is a unique synthesis of race, language, religion, and traditions.

The Project

The Nosy Be Archipelago is located off the north-west coast of Madagascar. A magnificent location with many islands and unique beaches, it offers stunning snorkelling and diving opportunities. Nosy Be is not overly touristic and rather relaxed with its sugar cane and vanilla plantations, rum distilleries, ylang ylang bushes and lounging lemurs. You can visit the colorful markets, take a boat journey to the islands, go for a hike in the tropical forests and explore the Malagasy culture. Many restaurants offer a variety of cuisines and are awaiting you for an exotic gastronomic experience. Nosy Be is a charming location worth discovering!

This project aims to maintain and preserve Nosy Be’s cultural and natural beach heritage through wildlife conservation and rehabilitation activities. You will have a unique opportunity to contribute to conserving this beautiful island’s precious ecosystem. As a participant in this exciting project, you will work together with the local communities to reverse the negative impact on the local flora and fauna and to restore the vibrant health of the ecosystem. What is currently observed is increasing pollution in the sea, rubbish on the beaches and the prevalence of plastic - bags, bottles, cotton bud sticks etc., which pose a threat to the life of the marine ecosystem and its inhabitants. You can join the efforts to drive awareness in schools, kindergartens and local communities as well as other marine and terrestrial conservation opportunities. You can translate your concern for the environment into action and use your own ideas, initiative, research and time to make a difference.

Typical day

After breakfast each day, there are many different options for what you may do. Your main tasks could be:

  • heading to the beach to participate in cleaning activities
  • planting trees in the tropical forest
  • take part in data collection on different species of flora and fauna
  • create safe resting zones and living space for lemurs
Depending on the requirements and needs at the specific moment and location, the coordinators will get you involved in different activities.
