Khaya Volunteer Projects

Garden Route Surf Assistant

Mossel Bay, South Africa show on map
If you enjoy water sports, such as surfing, love being around kids and want to teach them to be active and have a positive view on life then this project is for you! This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Singles
Couples
Families
Groups

As a volunteer at this project you will work to support the Core Surf Program in all ways possible but their most important task is providing personal supervision and hands-on assistance to the youngest children in the Core Surf Program. You will assist those children who do not yet have the necessary skills and experience to surf unassisted.

Learning to surf is a difficult task and children are recruited at the youngest age possible, between the ages of 6 to 9 years old. It takes considerable time before these children learn how to handle the power of the ocean and that’s why we need volunteers. Volunteers provide the physical strength necessary to negotiate the waves at Diaz Beach and the presence of mind to ensure the children’s safety while they begin the process of learning to surf.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

The Surfer Kids Education Project needs volunteers who are comfortable working with young children. Volunteers DO NOT need any previous surfing or ocean experience. However, volunteers MUST be comfortable in water and be able to swim confidently.

The Surfer Kids needs volunteers that are passionate about the natural environment, social development, the outdoors, sports and physical work. Volunteers MUST be able to speak fluent English and be able to use their imagination to keep children focused and engaged. It is essential that volunteers are passionate and motivated about the work they will be doing with The Surfer Kids.

Volunteers are not required to bring any equipment with them.

AREA

The Garden Route is a beautiful stretch of coastline that stretches from Mossel Bay (400km East of Cape Town) to the Tsitsikamma area, on the border between the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa.

There are four major towns along this stretch of coastline, Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. The name 'Garden Route' is derived from the evergreen and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. The area is blessed with an exceptionally mild climate and rainfall occurs all year-round, keeping the area lush and green throughout all seasons.

Summers do get hot, up to 30 degrees Celsius and sometimes more, but average summer temperatures hover around 25 degrees Celsius. Winters are cool and temperatures can sometimes drop below 10 degrees Celsius at night, with average temperatures ranging between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Several nature reserves embrace the varied ecosystems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals, whales and a host of other marine life. Various bays along the Garden Route are nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale. These gentle giants come here to calve in the winter and spring. (July to August and October to November.)

Typical day

DAILY ACTIVITIES

Volunteers’ work days are divided into two parts. The first part of the day consists of volunteer surfing sessions and / or maintenance work. The second part of the day is spent working with the Core Surf Program.

When working with the Core Surf Program volunteers assist with the following:

Physically assist the youngest children in the ocean, helping them to surf small waves in the shallows.

Playing beach games designed to develop the children’s physical abilities and build confidence for surfing.

Assist with general supervision on the beach.

Packing & unpacking of surf equipment before and after surf sessions.

During volunteer surfing session’s volunteers learn surfing. The Surfer Kids Surf Instructors teach volunteers all the practical skills necessary to surf and assist the children in the Core Surf Program. Volunteers are taught the mechanics of wave riding, swell, wind, tide, wave formation, currents and all other aspects of surfing. Volunteers are required to develop their own surfing skills as far as possible in order to assist the Core Surf Program. Volunteers are also instructed on how to supervise and assist the children when working with the Core Surf Program.

If conditions do not favour surfing during Core Surf Program time slots, volunteers will assist with the organisation of other beach games designed to develop the children’s strength, fitness and ocean awareness. Alternatively, volunteers and Surf Instructors will utilise The Surfer Kids Centre at Diaz Beach for hosting other educational activities, such as homework assistance or the screening of films. If conditions do not favour surfing during Volunteer Surfing time slots, volunteers assist with the repair and maintenance of The Surfer Kids equipment, working on surfboard repairs or doing general maintenance work at The Surfer Kids Centre.

Two days per week (Sunday and Monday) are reserved for resting, sightseeing and extra activities. Volunteers can explore the beautiful surrounding coastline of the Garden Route, visit nearby towns, go shopping and do various other adventure activities, such as bungee jumping, game drives, paragliding, whale watching, zip-sliding, etc., etc.

WORKING DAYS AND HOURS

As a volunteer your day usually starts working at 08:00 or 09:00 and you may sometimes be asked to work 8 hours a day, while sometimes only 4 to 5 hours, depending on the need of each project.
