Imed Vision

Gardner for the Food and Health Revolution

Gansbaai, South Africa

NGO | Imed Vision

An experienced gardner that can come to our project and help us create a vegetable garden, while educating the people about the benefits of healthy food.

The aim of i-med vision is to sustainably improve health and development of the children from the township Masakhane in Gansbaai.

To do so, i-med vision is developing a new and unique concept of education and advice, which improves basic medical knowledge in the population and facilitates access to health care. The concept empowers people to recognise warning symptoms of severe diseases, to notice development disorders, visual or hearing disorders and signs of violence and sexual abuse, as well as to seek medical advice early enough.

One focus of the work by i-med vision and the Grootbos Foundation is to encourage the integration of naturopathic, traditional and scientific medicine.

The project’s main goals are:
- Training of a basic medical understanding in the population
- Improvement of medical care in the township Masakhane in Gansbaai

An extremely important part of this project is healthy nutrition. The people in these townships have not received the proper education about nutrition that allows them to feed their children in the right way. They need experienced volunteers that can help them teach the people of the township how to grow good food and then how to cook it. As a volunteer in this project you would advise the township and help them in growing a garden from which they can then cook food.

During this volunteering experience you will have the opportunity to transfer your knowledge and skills to the local people and thereby leave a lasting impact. We expect that once you leave the project, the garden project has grown and the local people are able to continue your work once you are gone. You will also get to know much more of the local culture and share experience with the locals.

Typical day

During a typical day at the NGO, you would sleep at their volunteer house and exchange with other volunteers. You would then discuss and plan with the people from the township how to grow the garden in the most efficient way. You could then teach them on new methods for planting and growing the garden. If you have the knowledge you can then also teach them on how to use the things they have grown. Use your expertise and imagination to help these people in their quest for healthy food. In a typical day you would work 2-3 hours in the morning and 3-4 hours in the afternoon.

Free-time activities

The project is situated a few hours from Cape Town, a city with a great culture and history. There are some amazing things to visit there.

Additionally, there are many natural reserves and safaris around the NGO which you can visit in your free time. The nature around the township is beautiful as well and you can do a lot of Hiking.
