Girls and Teen mom's Shelter Supporter

This shelter offers a temporary home for girls that suffered from sexual abuse and/or domestic violence. They host about 60-80 girls and their 15-25 babies and toddlers.

This shelter is a government institution for young mothers and their children. This shelter is home to 60 mothers, girls and young children. The teenage mothers and their young infants can stay here, as well as teenage girls who have suffered from sexual abuse. The girls and mothers are all under 18 years old, and the children are aged approximately 0 to 5 years old. There is a lot of emphasis on psychology, as well as learning how to be a mother.

The shelter provides them with shelter, food, and basic medical supply, but the shelter is always in need of help. VOlunteers provide important assistance and are welcome to start fundraise campaigns or bring donations, which the shelter very much needs.
Work days are usually from 8am - 12pm and 2pm - 4.30pm, from Monday to Friday.
We provide you with all support and assistance to give you a valuable volunteer experience.

Volunteers are needed in the shelter to take care of the babies while the mothers are attending class, attend early stimulation sessions, assist the teachers in classes, or organize your own activities for the girls, to break up their daily routine and do something fun.

Typical day

Volunteers can dedicate their time to different activities;

- volunteers stay with the babies while the mothers are in class. This means feeding, changing and soothing the babies, as well as playing with them and teach the older toddlers some basic lessons. You also participate in early stimulation sessions with the babies.

- Assist a teacher in classes. The girls receive primary school lessons inside the shelter. The teachers could use some assistance in teaching the girls.

- Organize you own activities. As the girls are always inside of the shelter, they really appreciate a change of routine sometimes.  So together with the staff and Do Guatemala´s help, the volunteer has to make a plan for the time he/she will spend there. You can think of activities like crafts, music, art, sports, or something that you like or that you´re good at. You can plan activities for the babies or for the girls, according to your preference. The volunteer foresees in his/her own supplies.
