Samba Africa offers positions to work in public health, working towards better access and health awareness in several communities in Ghana.
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a serious disease caused by a virus which destroys the body’s natural protection from infection, and which usually causes death in Africa, killing most people as well as rendering them orphans. It is in this regard that S.V.O.has put up link with local organization in Ghana , which does a lot of work for the HIV AIDS Education and involve with community outreach programs such as educational programs etc.
This S.V.O.project aims at preventing the transmission of HIV AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis to give better support to those affected by the disease. Volunteers in this project are mostly involved in taking care of people affected by the disease notably children and out reach education. What volunteers are expected to do: Orientation and training for the first week by local experts.
Volunteers working in the HIV/AIDS project in Ghana can expect to work daily between 8am-3pm.
Activities includes, volunteers and local expert will be involved in:
• Community education
• Schools education
• Churches education
• Hairdresser's education
• Shoemakers/Cobbler education
• Markets/ Shopping centers education
• Lorry parks demonstration activities to increase the awareness campaign in the Ghanaian communities.
• Sometimes volunteers will engage in house-to-house education
• Volunteers will sometimes spend time with those affected by the disease, by helping them to take their medicines regularly as well as giving them care and comfort.
• Community education through drama.
• Volunteers shall reach out to commercial sex workers / prostitutes at red right areas with the message of abstinence and condom use.
Weekends, are free days to volunteers. You may choose to travel out of town to see the many interesting sights and sounds in other parts of Ghana or hang out with your fellow volunteer(s) and/or locals in the neighborhood.
On the day (or night) of your arrival, SAMBA AFRICA VOLUNTEERING (SAVO) staffs will be at the airport to welcome you and transfer you to a hotel with air-conditioned rooms and restaurant only in the night of your arrival, Orientation and transportation to your assigned placement will be done the next morning following your arrival day but arrival in day time you will be transported to your destination (KUMASI).
The accommodation belongs to the host-families. There are always other people in the house as well; and they would be willing to give you some assistance. You would be placed in the same location with another volunteer - unless you specifically state that you like to be stayed alone. Participants coming as couple or pair will not be placed with other volunteers in the same bedroom. The volunteer(s) have their separate room - with a lock and keys
Volunteers will be served three meals daily. Breakfast is usually tea/ coffee/ oats or corn porridge and bread with jam/ butter/ egg omelet. Lunch; plantain or rice or yam with vegetable stew or similar. Dinner; yam, pasta or plantain with vegetable sauce or stew or soup. For dessert you'd be served an orange or pineapple
