What’s Not Included in Fees - FLIGHT, VISA COSTS, INSURANCE, TRANSPORTATION
FLIGHTS: It is your responsibility to purchase a return flight to your your program destination. The cost of this ticket will vary depending on where you live. We do not book flights for volunteers.
VISA COSTS: The majority of our participants do not need a visa to travel to our three program destinations. When you do need a visa, it should cost no more than US$75 and we will provide you with any supporting documentation needed for your visa application but it is your responsibility to apply for the visa.
TRAVEL INSURANCE: It is mandatory for all volunteers participating on the uVolunteer program to have a travel insurance policy. The cover you choose should cover for things like medical emergencies, travel disruptions, damaged or lost luggage, and the loss of expensive items such as smartphones, laptops and cameras. The cost of your policy will depend of the duration of your trip and the what covered, budget $50 – $95.
LOCAL TRANSPORTATION: Traveling to your work placement is key to culturally integration, and an important part of your time abroad. Some volunteers will be able to walk to their projects. Those whose projects are not within walking distance will have to take a short local bus ride, or a local taxi ride costing no more than $2 daily. Sometimes project staff may provide volunteers a lift from the dorm to work and back. You should budget for about $2 daily for travel to your placement.
AIRPORT DROP-OFF: It will be your responsibility to travel back to the airport after your placement. We find that by the end of your program you should be confident enough to take public transport to return to the airport. Your coordinators can also arrange for a local taxi service to drop you off at the airport. Costs $10 for public bus or $60 for personal taxi service.
PERSONAL EXPENSES: During your 4-day working week you should spend no more than $20. You can spend much more or less depending on your social activities and habits.
WEEKEND TRIPS & TRAVEL: During your 3-day weekend you will spend most of the money that you will bring on your trip. Budgets for weekend trips should be around US$150. These are low figures so budget for more if you plan on doing a lot during the weekends. Because of orientation, you will not be able to travel during your first weekend.
