The Project

During this project, you will help look after children that come from unstable environments. Some of the children suffer from physical and psychological abuse. You will volunteer in orphanages, which give the children a temporary place to live while their parents undergo counseling or treatment. If the home environment does not improve, the children will be moved with the hopes for an adoption.

The orphanage provides a home-like atmosphere for the children where they also get psychological and health assistance from professional doctors, nurses, and therapists. By volunteering at these homes, you are helping children heal who have suffered tragedies in their lives or neglect from their parents. These homes are either run by the government or privately through sponsors and are severely underfunded. Volunteers are vital when helping the children.

Most of the children live in groups with 10-20 children that are between the ages of 1 and 9. There are also women that live in the house and provide round-the-clock care. Some volunteers may also be placed in a transitional home. These homes are run by the government and offer a place for the children to stay as the orphanages decide whether the child will return to his family or join a new family through adoption. The children in these homes range from 0-13 years old, and the orphanages have a capacity for 120 minors.

As a volunteer that works with children, there can be a lot of unforeseen situations that arise. You should be spontaneous, tolerant, and creative when carrying out your daily tasks. Keep in mind that you will be a role model for these children, so please take your responsibilities seriously.

Your Tasks

Your daily tasks revolve around the needs of the children. You might:

  • Organize games and activities
  • Play sports and games

  • Play group games or with single children
  • Help with chores
  • Provide warm and caring attention to the children
  • Help feed and wash children
  • Assist with laying the small children down for naps
