Help the handicapped by assisting with horseback riding therapy sessions. Take care of horses, assist during riding lessons, clean stables, and organize events! This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

The Project

This project takes place at a center that helps the handicapped. The main objective of the center is to improve coordination and orientation skills of patients. The center consists of 8 staff members who all have extensive experience working with the physically or mentally disabled. Volunteers come from around the globe to be a part of this team.

The center has a unique approach and utilizes the powerful combination of equine therapy and the use of alpha waves. Alpha waves influence people’s emotional behavior and the central nervous system. They can also release endorphins, which produces happiness and calmness within the person. When receiving the treatment, patients are often distracted from their mental and physical pain and can more easily improve their social skills.

When riding on the back of a horse, patients’ alpha waves rise, which results in an increase of physical and mental abilities. The center also offers conventional therapies, such as speech therapies to help the patients during their stay. This is also teamed with alternative therapies, such as music therapy.

The center has a riding hall, cafeteria, administrative office, volunteer house, and therapy house. The aim of the center is to improve the patients’ lives both socially and mentally. The principle objectives include early learning for children up to 6 years old, social integration, equal opportunities, and rehabilitation for children, teenagers, and adults.

Your Tasks

On a typical work day, volunteers are expected to take care of the horses by feeding them and cleaning their stables. They are also expected to take part in riding lessons and help with seminars offered at the center. Other general work tasks around the center and inside the cafeteria are also part of a volunteers’ duties.

This project is very rewarding and appropriate for people with experience in physical therapy because they will be able to support the therapists. Any previous experience that volunteers may have is welcomed, but not required. This project is open to everyone. Volunteers should have some basic knowledge about horses and love working with children. If you are unfamiliar with horses, you will be given a basic training lesson.

Free-time activities

In your spare time, there are many different activities to do, such as horseback riding and doing sports. There are also many bars and restaurants where volunteers can socialize in Tumbaco and Quito, which can be reached by public bus. Quito, Ecuador's capital, is not too far away and there you can enjoy many different cultural activities and do sightseeing in the well-preserved historic center of the city.
