Himalaya Teaching Assistant

We need volunteers who can help students by teaching them English vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and speaking skills.

Program Introduction

The program is a community school that helps the local children to motivate, empower and educate through learning. It is situated in the village Gojra, Khaknal of tehsil Manali in the Kullu district. The school is up to middle class standard and serves around 200-400 students from age group 3 to 16 in mixed genders. The major problem of the school is that the teachers in the school are not well versed in English, especially in pronunciation and grammar, so the students don't have the chance to learn good English. Until now they can only understand a little bit of English and speak in a very wrong accent with wrong pronunciation. We are in need of volunteers who can help the students by teaching them English vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and speaking skills. Some other tasks can be helping in evening classes for adolescent girls, adult education and women education as well.

  • teaching English (tenses, grammar, speaking, pronunciation, introduction and making bio-data etc.)
  • teaching mathematics (according to the standard of the students, class-wise syllabus)
  • English lab, math lab & illustrative activities of teaching
  • helping the teachers in completing the syllabus
  • helping the students in completing the home-work
  • problem-solving sessions with students
  • encouraging the girl child education in the school
  • helping the slow learners
  • group-discussion sessions with the students & teachers
  • teaching the students about hazardous effects of tobacco chewing, smoking, intoxication etc.
  • other activities initiated by the individual volunteer

Volunteer Trip Itinerary for the Himalayas:

Pre-Departure Assistance & Booking The Trip

Once your application form is submitted with the questionnaire and we found you suitable for the program, our team will contact you for depositing the program fee. Then, once our bank confirms the receipt of your fee, we will initiate the documentation process regarding your trip. You will get assistance in booking your flights, applying for your visa, informing yourself about needed vaccinations and insurances, packing for the trip and other essential things.

Information about the Himalayan Programs, Host Family & Activities

In the evening our local Aii Group coordinator will conduct an orientation session for the volunteers to introduce the Himalayan program information, host family details and other activities you can do on weekends like skiing, trekking, sightseeing, river rafting, banana boating, kayaking, mountaineering, camping, bike renting and a lot of things that the Himalaya offers. After this orientation session you will stay in the guest house for the night.

Observation Day, Program Visit & Meeting the Beneficiaries

The next morning your visit to the program is fixed. Your first day will be an 'observation day' at the program area. The coordinator or any Aii Group staff will arrange a visit to the programs we have, to have a sense of environment and working conditions. The volunteer gets to know all the other volunteers who are working there already and can have a little chat about their findings and suggestions to start with. The local staff and you will meet the beneficiaries with whom you are going to work. The local programs are real and they really need volunteering assistance and care. This is an important day for the volunteer to observe the program and to see that where they fit in and what skills they possess to help on the program, because the next day will be your first volunteering day.

Program Completion

The last Friday of your volunteer program will be slightly different and fun-filled. Take group pictures, selfies and show your gratitude towards the Aii Group staff and other volunteers for the cooperation, affection and support. You can also arrange a small party with your host family at the last day and spend some emotional moments. Meet all the friends you made during your stay and thank them for your time together. On the last evening of your program in the camp, we will celebrate it with some candles, balloons and cakes. This will be like a thanksgiving session to you from the Aii team for your time, efforts and dedication. Then you will be free to do your own activities.

Suitable for

Typical day

In the Himalayan programs you stay either in a host family or a guest house. Most volunteers choose to stay with a Himalayan host family.

So your day starts with a knock on your door to have the bed tea. Then, after freshening up, you will be gathering in the dinner hall for the breakfast with your family members and then you will leave the house for the program by walk.

Most of the programs are located on mountains and you can reach them by walking to the connecting roads. The programs are mostly in a 1 kilometer area.

After reaching the project you will meet your supervisor, ask for the daily schedule and start your work. You can teach till the school closes. If you want to stay longer you can help and arrange evening classes in your host family for the local neighbours as well.

In the evening you can have a cup of Himalayan tea with your host family and take a short walk after dinner. This is how your volunteer day looks like.
