HIV/AIDS and Widows Encouragement

Arusha, Tanzania show on map

empower widows, children and victims of HIV and AIDS to cultivate better lives for themselves and their families

WEHAF(Widows Encouragement & HIV/AIDS Foundation) has been founded in 2016 to empower widows, children and victims of HIV and AIDS to cultivate better lives for themselves and their families. Being a widow after the husband dies due to HIV / AIDS is a hard life here in Tanzania. The women and their children mostly lose their income stability, which is still provided by the male in most tanzanian families. Moreover they have to fear to lose their homes, since they moved in in their husbands house shortly after the marriage. There are some women ending up being homeless and without an income, trying to open up a business to ensure their own sustainable source of income. Due to all those things happening to HIV / AIDS widows the NGO WEHAF was founded and is now working from a small town outside of Arusha to help and empower those in need. The project's aim is to mobilize, motivate and advocate for these vulnerable group in the areas of health, social justice and economic empowerment.

The project

The project's workers do day-to-day work largely focused on entrepreneurship training, research, community health initiatives, advocacy and fundraising. They run a variety of programs supporting widows and their families usually with some type of training in sustainable horticulture, tailoring or baking. They also work to implement village community banking schemes in rural areas around Arusha. You, as a volunteer at this NGO, will help the staff organize their trips to the rural villages to teach and coach the women and their children, you might maintain the WEHAF'S internet site and social media sites, you might write and support fundraisers and be in daily contact to empower the women and kids. You will work together with the motivated and young team of the NGO daily to coordinate your activities. WEHAF is always in need of volunteers onsite. They are looking for volunteers in the field of marketing, business, health education, education for children, entrepreneurship skills training, proposal writing and fundraising. Moreover the organizsation just recently opened a workshop to teach and train women in tailoring. You are welcome to oversee those activities and to conduct new ideas regarding designs of products or the daily organization and marketing process.

Important

You do not need any previous knowledge. Since WEHAF is interested in volunteers in various fields, you will be able to find your right task. It's important that you are self-driven and open-minded to find new ways to help and improve. To help the continuing of the foundation's work donations and fundraisers are always welcomed.

Typical day

your work -  "a typical day"

There is no typical day for you as a volunteer at WEHAF. You can chose your own tasks regarding your knowledge and interest, so every day can be different due to that. Every day will start with your travel to the NGO's office and workshop in Maji ya Chai, Usa River, Arusha, which will take you about one hour with the public transport. You are required to report at the office at around 9 am with a meeting, where you will discuss your today's work with the co-workers. In general your days could be in the office or in the villages, where you work with the widows and their children to improve their lives. Possible work areas are: health education of the community and society about the impact and outcomes of HIV/AIDS. Training single women on writing business proposals and keeping their businesses running, educating the widow's children, inventing and introducing new marketing strategies for WEHAF, improving the website and social media, writing fundraisers to support the good cause of WEHAF's work and collecting donations. But regardless the field you are interested in you will feel like a valuable part of this whole project. The staff will welcome you with open arms and your thoughts and input how to help and improve will be highly appreciated. You will be part of a very meaningful and sustainable work environment. All you have to bring along is your motivation, new ideas and passion to make a change in the women's lives.
