Tho Homestay & Sister's House

Homestay Marketing Supporter

Ha Giang, Vietnam show on map

We transformed our traditional wooden home into a homestay for travelers, and we need help promoting, managing, and fundraising for this business.

How the Homestay Operates

This homestay is in Na Rang village of the Tay minority and is conveniently located between Sapa and the town of Ha Giang. Tourists can arrive by motorbike if they're doing a motorbike loop or by bus from Ha Giang or Hanoi. Guests can arrange to take guided walking or motorbike tours led by the owner who has worked as a tour guide. Guests will sleep in our traditional bamboo house, eat home-cooked ethnic food (mostly from our farm and garden), and are free to relax and explore our farm and property.

This homestay provides an interesting cultural experience in a non-touristic area of Ha Giang province. Our goal is to bring tourism into our village so our neighbors can also benefit, but at the same time, we don't want to lose our traditions and change our lifestyle.

We have several Vietnamese volunteers (young adults) who are helping with this homestay so they can learn the business and in turn create their own homestays in their villages. We are looking for foreign volunteers to join our team, assist with daily operations, and help us promote Tho Homestay on social media.

We are also trying to fundraise to build a private guesthouse on our property (for guests/couples who desire more space). When we have guests who want to go on tours, volunteers can accompany us to take pictures for social media and help us the logistics of our tours (and of course, to enjoy the sights).

Possible Volunteer Responsibilities

1. Promote/manage Tho Homestay social media and email

  • Take photos from our neighborhood and post them on facebook and instagram
  • Reply to inquiries from guests on social media and from booking websites. We are currently registered on several booking sites
  • Design flyers and posters to advertise events or tours

2. Help with fundraising for construction projects to improve the homestay

  • Write requests for funding on crowdfunding websites or for local funding opportunities
  • Help us plan what to build and budget for it

In return, you'll get to be a guest in our lovely homestay! You'll eat home-cooked meals with us, have time to explore the village and countryside roads, and you'll have an authentic experience living in a rural (but comfortable) traditional home. When guests come, you can go on our walking or motorcycle tours with them for free! We have high-speed wifi, renovated bathrooms and showers (with hot water!), and incredible mountain views.

Typical day

We ask volunteers to work for up to five hours a day five days a week, but usually the workload will be less than this. The workload is around 3-5 hours per day (depending on the week), and you'll have weekends off. When we have guests, you'll be able to socialize with them and help make them feel comfortable.

A typical day will start with breakfast together when we will discuss the day's plans. After that, you will know what is expected of you and when you will have free time. If the only thing to do is to keep up with the social media, you can do that anytime during the day.

Each day, you can help us by taking a few pictures or videos of your adventures around our province and at the homestay and updating our social media. We also have a collection of pictures that can be used for the posts. After that, we may need help responding to guests, creating profiles on hotel booking sites, and updating existing profiles. We may need help creating crowdfunding campaigns or writing grants to promote our business. If we have guests, you can participate in tours with them to help document our tours with pictures and little write-ups.

This is a relaxed homestay, and we are steadily making progress on our goals and could use your help, but we aren't a labor camp :) The work won't be the same from day to day, but we are committed to making sure you enjoy yourself and have time to explore the area.

We are just getting started, so if you have ideas for improvement when you come, we'd love to hear them too! We hope to attract people who are willing to share their lives and their interests with us.

Free-time activities

There are mountains and farms all around. Usually, volunteers relax around our property for part of their free time and go out to explore the rice terraces, mountains, villages, and bamboo forests for the rest of it. It's a great place for people who enjoy interesting walks/runs or motorbike rides.

We have wifi which is strong enough to use in the house or when relaxing in the common areas outside.
