Homework & Activity Assistance

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa show on map

Non-profit | African Samaritans

Volunteers will be assisting students with homework, sport and some fun, holistically focusing on the Mind, Body and Spirit.

This is a homework assistance and tuition programme for underpriviledged children aged 6 to 18 who are not receiving individual attention in the class due to large classrooms of approximately 40 children per class. The core values of YMCA should be maintained throughout and these are CARING - RESPECT - HONESTY - RESPONSIBILITY - UBUNTU (uu-BOON-tuu; Zulu pronunciation: [ùɓúntʼú]) is a Nguni Bantu term roughly translating to "human kindness.")

Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn new skills whilst assisting students with homework, tuition, sports and some fun.  We focus on the Mind, Body and Spirit of each child/youth. Classes run from Monday to Friday and if needed by students, some Saturdays. The biggest gap is in Mathematics, Geography, Science, English and IT and individuals with sport coaching or a performing art will be preferred. To improve the levels of education in a country where the teacher-student-ratio is mostly above 1:40, therefore being able to give students individual attention who already start life with a disadvantage due to their financial status. Meet and debrief with Project Manager on a regular basis, be able to draw up a programme and budget and to implement it whilst regularly reporting on the programme in writing, update statistical data on online portal and to present digital evidence.
Volunteers will work from the YMCA Campus in the city of Pietermaritzburg.
