House Construction

Antigua, Guatemala show on map
Help construct houses for families in Guatemala! Use your skills and abilities to help improve the lives of the locals. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

The Project

Antigua suffers from extreme poverty. Some families have no home to shelter themselves or their children, and most impoverished families live in poorly assembled shacks that are made of cardboard, sheet metal, and trash. The shacks only have one room, where the families live, eat, and sleep.

This project calls for a lot of physical work, so it is important that volunteers come prepared to work hard and start helping with tasks right away. The main objective of this project is to build new homes and improve existing ones for families living in poverty.

The families who are part of this project must be in possession of the land the house is build on, so the family's situation will be analyzed, taking into account the socio-economic aspects.

Houses usually take around 7-10 days to build. They are small houses, around 30 square metres, but are a major improvement for the current living situation of the family. This help is very emotional for the families and very satisfying for the volunteers, as they get to witness their work change people’s lives.

Your Tasks

On a typical work day, your tasks will include:

  • Transporting materials and tools
  • Screwing metal scaffolding
  • Trimming and preparing cement blocks
  • Erecting walls
  • Leveling the ground
  • Constructing roofs

During the project, you will get to know the family as you work together side-by-side to build their new home. You will also get to watch the families move into the house, which is a very rewarding and emotional experience.

Free-time activities

In your spare time, there are many different activities to choose from in Antigua, such as a variety of different sports. Many volunteers also go for hikes around Antigua and look at its beautiful colonial buildings. There are also many different bars where volunteers can go to socialize.

The surroundings of Antigua await your with amazing nature and landscapes. Different type of day trips to tourist attractions can be booked at tour operator agencies in Antigua.
