All Hands and Hearts

Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Supporter

Houston, United States of America show on map

We are currently mucking and gutting, installing insulation and drywall, doing mold sanitation and rebuilding homes so individuals and families can move back in!

This is the fourth time that All Hands and Hearts has responded in the Gulf Coast region of Texas in the last two years alone. That makes this response personal for us. Initially, our teams were operating in Fort Bend County, Harris County, and Aransas Pass, knee deep in mucking and gutting, mold sanitation, chainsaw work and debris removal – the first big leaps toward getting families back into their homes. Another team worked to operate the VRC (Volunteer Reception Center) in Aransas Pass, enabling volunteers to effectively plug into the response effort.

We are currently running two programs within Texas – Houston and Aransas Pass. Both programs have transitioned to recovery and teams will focus on ensuring disaster survivors are provided with the support needed in rebuilding their lives. Thank you to our partner TUMI for their generous donation of $400,000 that will enable our team to rebuild The Rhodes School for the Performing Arts in Houston. This public charter school offers tuition-free education to low-income minority communities. 550 pre-K through eighth-grade students attended the Rhodes school until it became flooded during Hurricane Harvey. All Hands and Hearts will be rebuilding the main building on the campus, as well as gutting, sanitizing, and rebuilding the five remaining mobile units and demolishing and rebuilding two handicap ramps leading up to the units.

Volunteering with All Hands and Hearts is completely free, and we provide free accommodation and meals for each workday. Additionally, if volunteers can join us for two weeks or more, we can provide a round-trip flight from within the United States to aid with the costs of getting to and from the program. No construction experience is required, and each site is supervised by a professional staff member or trained team leader. Tools are provided. All you need is a pair of workboots and a positive attitude!

We've had volunteers join us for one day, one week, or even several months! There is no minimum required length of stay, and we welcome people to come for as long as they would like. To qualify for the flight, however, volunteers do need to commit to at least two weeks or more. Volunteers will be working with other volunteers.

Volunteers come from all over the world, with over 70 different nationalities represented! As a result, it creates a neat, multicultural vibe on base full of different experiences, beliefs, and backgrounds.

Typical day

We currently work from Tuesday-Saturday, with Sunday and Monday as our days off. On Sunday and Monday, you will be asked to provide your own meals, but accommodation is still provided. We wake up at 7 AM, where we'll eat breakfast, make lunch, and be ready to go by 7:40 AM. By then, you'll meet your team leader to go onto your site until 4 PM. On-site, you'll be doing tasks ranging from mucking and gutting, mold sanitation, painting, carpentry, installing insulation and drywall, and any other step needed to finish the home. You'll get a safety briefing and your site supervisor will educate you on the proper use of power tools, providing everything you need to know to have a fun, safe and positive experience.

From 4 PM-5:30 PM, it is free time - an opportunity to relax, shower, and hang out with the other volunteers on base. At 5:30 PM, we'll have a short, general meeting to go over our day and any announcements, and then dinner. After dinner, the night is yours, until the midnight curfew.
