Passionate, analytical and fun loving volunteer required to help develop and run the Impact Assessment program at an awesome charity in the best city in Mexico (Oaxaca).

About the Program

The Impact Assessment volunteer will support Fundacion En Via team in the development and ongoing implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the organisation’s programs. Working closely with the Operations Program Manager (OPM), the ideal candidate will take a lead role in the collection, analysis, and presentation of both quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of sources. 

The Impact Assessment Volunteer will collaborate with the OPM and the rest of the En Via team to coherently communicate findings and feedback both internally and externally. They will play a key role in ensuring a greater overall understanding of the impact of En Via's initiatives, allowing us to better strategise future efforts.


Volunteers will have the following responsibilities and tasks:

  • Collect, organise, enter and analyse data from various sources, including quantitive and qualitative
  • Assist in creation of meaningful reports and visualizations to communicate insights with program managers
  • Work closely with the OPM in ongoing in-depth analysis of the operation of En Vía’s programs, assessing the alignment of the results with En Vía’s mission and goals
  • Analyse data from pilot projects and compile reports evaluating their efficacy
  • Work closely with the Coordinator to develop and refine En Vía’s Impact Assessment methodology and data management systems. Assist with research and creation of briefs to keep up to date on evaluation practices in the field, support with the development and implementation of new tools to measure impact
  • Participate in data collection in the field.


The minimum requirements are:

  • Advanced level of Spanish (at least mid C1 at the time of application/interview).
  • Undergraduate degree with studies/coursework in Economics, International Affairs, Policy Studies, Data Handling/Analysis or other related disciplines.
  • Comfortable with data collection, organisation and analysis primarily using MS Excel; familiar with use of formulas, creation of pivot tables, multi table pivot analysis, development of charts, etc. 
  • Experience with in-depth data and meaningful analysis, reporting, and presentation; demonstrated interest in quantitative and qualitative approaches to evaluation.
  • Excellent attention to detail, highly organised, strong communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic empowerment / gender equality / accessible financial services / social impact work.
  • Strong initiative and an ability to work independently.

 Preferred additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in non-profit social impact / monitoring and evaluation work
  • Experience using Salesforce or similar database platform
  • Experience living / working abroad.

Please note that volunteers will need to bring their own laptop to work on. 

Additional Information:

We unfortunately do not have accommodation to offer, however, we can help volunteers in finding local low cost accommodation (typical price is ~$150-200USD pcm).

Typical day

Typical Working Week:

3 days 10a.m. - 4p.m. working in our beautiful garden office with the rest of the En Via staff.

1 day 10a.m. - 7p.m. working in the office for the morning and then in the communities for the afternoon (collecting data/helping collect loan repayments).

1 day (Friday) 10a.m. - 2p.m. working in the office with an early finish to enjoy the weekend. 

Typical Working Day:

Analyzing data, working with program coordinators to find out what data/information they require and making plans to provide this data swiftly and efficiently. Researching best practice and coming up with ideas and ways to measure our Impact in the communities we work with. 

Details on Arrival

Required Time Commitment:

Minimum 4-month commitment, 6+ months preferred. Ideal start date: Mid July ‘17

Approximately 30 hours/week, Monday – Friday with the very occasional Saturday if required. 

Free-time activities

Oaxaca is a vibrant and dynamic place to live with lots of music, art, food and festivals at all times of the year. Around the city there are many sights to see such as the exceptionally popular Hiervel el Agua and the ancient ruins of Monte Alban. 

Further afield there are mountains with hiking trails and natural pools and some exceptionally beautiful and interesting small towns and villages. 

Oaxaca state also has some of the best beaches in Mexico such as Puerto Escondido, Mazunte and Huatulco, and the city is a 6hr bus from Puebla - a bustling student city full of culture - and 8hr bus (or 1hr flight)  from Mexico City. 


Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (fluently) and Spanish (intermediate level)
Education Requirements
Maths, Statistics, Social Science at College/University level

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either. Please arrange your own accommodation. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Xoxocotlan Airport (OAX) in Oaxaca. We assist you to find cheap flights to Mexico.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Mexico provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Mexico you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Mexico.
