Our health & nutrition support program

If you want to have a unique experience of helping the needy in the community, to initiate community projects and changing lives of PLWHA in their home environment, then ALEJO Community Support Project in Zambia, is the right place for you. Come and join us for the experience of a lifetime. Volunteers must be passion to give hope to the needy everyday and move in various homes to get to the people in the communities. In our project, you can see exactly where your donations are going and how they are benefiting our targeted populations and our community.

Our project has so far supported more than 5000 PLWHA from the poor communities and we have now started empowering their households with agriculture inputs,village chicks and medications so as to enable them live positive lives in the communities. We need volunteers to help us keep these people happy and healthy in their communities. With volunteer support and donations, we hope to support more people. 

Typical day

Your Stay 

Our days begin with early morning task sharing through the daily plans to find the households, visiting with them while observing and taking data on their livelihood until lunch. Some days lunch is eaten with the people in the community, a very unique experience! Volunteers will usually return to the office around early afternoon but the day doesn’t end there. 

You will have the opportunity to participate in teaching health matters at the community groups which usually meet in the afternoon for savings groups.  You will also learn about our local languages and culture. We also have a number of traditional ceremonies which you will attend. 

Volunteers can stay with us anywhere from 3 days to 3 months. However, we recommend at least a week to get the full experience of our organization. Students who wish to carry out research for their studies are also welcome.

Details on Arrival


Volunteers must come with an open mind and be prepared to work with and experience another culture. 

You will have the chance to experience a diversity of tasks. Please be aware that tasks may vary depending on the time of your arrival and your own preferences.

Some of the tasks include: 

  • carrying out health checks
  • performing research on the social economic status of community members.
  • taking part in community projects such as teaching village chicken raring,Sexual Reproductive Health Rights,HIV prevention at the schools and to other locals,visiting agriculture fields of community members
  • Preparing feed for the village chickens
  • helping out in the fields planting and harvesting crops

Volunteers will also be expected to help us take care of any visitors and educate them on the real community situation in Zambia.

Free-time activities

During the volunteer program, there will times when the volunteers will have a break from the usual activities and have free time to go out to tourist places such falls, Game parks,stadiums,Museums,Music concerts.Our organization will arrangefor a tourism trip to go the tourist capital of Zambia (Livingstone) where the volunteers will have time to view the Victoria falls (one of seven world wonders).In addition, the volunteers will also have an opportunity to go to game park (Kafue National Park) to view animals popularly known as the big five (such as Elephants,Leopards,Rhino,Buffalo and Lions).

The team of volunteers will also have an opportunity to visit annual cultural ceremonies for various tribes in Zambia which take place every.At these event there are traditional musical concerts which will give the volunteers time to sample the Zambian music and other traditional values.

Volunteers will be able to watch various sports disciplines some which the volunteers will also share with their Zambian counterparts. Zambia has various sports such as football,volley ball,rugby,Hockey,Chess,Handball,Boxing,swimming and athletics.These activities will be done after planning

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
The following are not required but it would be preferable if volunteers had these skills Computer skills, Community mobilization skills, leadership skills, teaching skills and drama skills.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 08:00 - 16:00

Airport Pickup at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport

We will provide spacious and comfortable airport pickup for the volunteers to and fro. There will be a vehicle that will be stationed at the airport to wait for the volunteer and bring them to the district where they will be staying. The volunteers will be given all the support needed during the transit from the airport up to the point of stay. The volunteers will also be allowed to pass through some shopping malls in case they need to buy some things before starting off to Mufulira district.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be peri-urban set up with proper security and friendly people in the community. We will accommodate the volunteers in the homes of host families who are partners and members of ALEJO Community Support Project. These homes are located in town with easy access to transport and shopping centres. The accommodation for volunteers will be inspected by our team so that the rooms are well prepared.

Guest Family
Food & Beverages

The food that will be provided are rice,meat,vegetables,water melons,bananas,sweet potatoes,chickens,fish,apples, ice cream and there will African foods which will be prepared for the volunteers to test also. In our program we will also allow the volunteers to suggest what type of they would want to for each particular day.Therefore,host families will prepare a menu where the volunteer will make selections at will.

The drinks will include soft drinks, fruit juices and mineral water.

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport (NLA) in Ndola. We assist you to find cheap flights to Zambia.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Zambia provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Zambia you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Zambia.

You can volunteer at the project site in Mufulira/Zambia between 12 weeks and 12 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. ALEJO Community Support Projec will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Zambia.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with {project.name} during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
