Indigenous Community Assistant

Learn to work with agriculture, play with children, teach English to adults and children, assist in constructing and repairing cottages

The project

This project takes part in a village that is located besides the Beni River in the Bolivian Amazon rainforest. It is close to the national park which is world known for its biodiversity. The village is only accessible by a 40 minute boat ride. The community you will be staying with has around 235 people. A few years ago the community built an eco-lodge which has a restaurant and cabins for guests. The money from the lodge goes towards preserving the nature and improving education and health.

When the Madidi National Park was created, the community was absolutely against this project, but tourism’s many advantages to the community have completely changed their opinion, instead of protesting against the park they now protect it as park rangers. The community lives with the environment and depends on nature for the survival of the community.

This project will show you how to live in harmony without the need of modern technology, you will get a warm welcome from the community which will allow you to learn from their culture.

Your work
In this program you will live and work in an indigenous community with the Tacana indians. You will learn how the indigenous people plant rice and collect fruits and vegetables for their food and also how to hunt and make medicine. You learn to live like them through working directly with the community members.

On a day to day basis you will be: teaching the adults and children english and or your native language if it is different, guiding tourists, helping in the kitchen, household chores. There are a lot of things volunteers can do, so you should be flexible to help wherever the community needs you!

Please keep in mind that you will live a very simple way of life. You should be respectful of the people and their traditions that span several centuries.
