Ever wished you can travel to the Islands of Indonesia? Or how about Volunteering? Why not do both and travel to the beautiful Bangkaru Island located in Indonesia!  Come take part in a unique volunteer opportunity of working together with researchers, marine biologists and other volunteers to Conserve the Islands wide and abundant Flora and Fauna! As a volunteer at Bangkaru your main involved is with Turtle monitoring & surveying and assisting the researchers in their daily tasks. 

Bankgkaru is a tropical island consisting mainly of untouched rainforest and effervescent coral reefs along the coastal line. This particular island has a famously named beach that is, Turtle Beach and as the name says, this is one of Indonesia’s most fertile and prominent breeding sites for The Green Sea Turtles and The Leatherback Turtles which are both considered an endangered species! The beach stretches for about 1.7 kilometers and is a marvelous site to see. 
The Island has been facing some serious issues such as; turtle egg pouching, destructive development plans and unsustainable fishing practices. The main focus of this project is to address those issues as soon as possible to protect and conserve Indonesia’s rich and untouched environment, therefore, the project is in need of your help all year round! The minimum duration offered is 2 weeks and the maximum duration is 4, however, we can extend your stay if you so desire! 

Requirements:
  • Required to commit to a minimum of 2 weeks.
  • Strong work ethics are required: reliable, responsible, honest, good sense of humour, dependable, physically and mentally fit.
  • Open to learning new traditions and cultures.
  • Age: 18+
  • A love for animals and some experience with researching and marine biology.
  • Must read and agree to abide by guidelines and ethics.
  • A Good physical stamina and health.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work alone as well as in groups.
The Project is located in Bangkaru Island, Aceh, Indonesia which is west of the Mainland, Sumatra. Have fun exploring this beautiful and untamed island and be a part of an amazing Indonesian experience.
On leisure time, go sightseeing, surfing and lots more on the beautiful Bangkaru Island!

On the island, all volunteers will be housed in the HAKA Rangers Camp with rooms that are modest dormitory styled. There’s also a small organic garden which volunteers can access at any time for use and the camp site is located just a few minutes away from the beach. Please note that you are responsible for keeping your sleeping area/room tidy and your own laundry.

You will be volunteering along side other international volunteers and local staff who will support, guide and train you during your experience.

Typical day

The responsibilities will differ since you won’t be involved in just one main activity. There are quite a few activities which forms the core foundation of the Conservation program on Bangkaru Island. The hours will pass by quickly due to endless duties that need to be completed on a daily basis. Some of these responsibilities that will be designated to you are as follows:

  • Sea Turtle Project-Turtle Patrolling, Turtle Surveying, Turtle Tagging and Measuring, Marine Debris Surveying.
  • Biodiversity Surveying & Research-Species and Vegetation Surveying, Nias Hill Myna Project.
  • Reef & Sustainable Fishing Project- Reef Surveying, Sustainable Fishing Education.
Every day is different at the program but your main involvement will be regarding the surveying and monitoring of the local turtle populations.

There are no specific start dates however, we recommend that you try to book early in advance so as to secure a spot!


Free-time activities

Volunteers have lots of free time after completeing a day's work. They can use this time to go hiking, swimming, surfing, visit the beach and so much more!

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (intermediate level)

Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 07:30 - 12:30

The Fee includes:


  • Accommodation - On the island, all volunteers will be housed in the HAKA Rangers Camp with rooms that are modest dormitory styled. There’s also a small organic garden which volunteers can access at any time for use and the camp site is located just a few minutes away from the beach.
  • Meals- On Bangkaru Island, all volunteers will be expected to work with the HAKA Rangers to prepare meals with all ingredients and groceries bought from Simeulue Island.
  • Airport Pick up - Flights would be in and out of Medan (Kualanamu International Airport), Indonesia (the project covers the local flights from there) they would pick up and drop you off at the local airport. All transportation will be included as well during your stay in Indonesia.
  • Mail-Holding Services - You can use FRONTEERINGS office as a reliable address to have your mail delivered.

Airport Pickup at Kuala Namu International Airport

You will arrive in Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) where you will catch another flight (the project will assist with the booking of this flight) you will then fly to Simeulue Island where you will be met by the team. Your orientation will then begin that same day and you will then be transferred to Bangkaru Island the next day where you will start the volunteer project.

Volunteers work with HAkA turtle rangers to prepare meals with ingredients brought from Simeulue Island, and are enjoyed around a campfire under a starry night.

Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Kuala Namu International Airport (KNO) in Kuala Namu. We assist you to find cheap flights to Indonesia.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Indonesia provides security and is a plus to have.

You can volunteer at the project site in Medan/Indonesia between 2 weeks and 4 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Fronteering Travel will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Indonesia.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Fronteering Travel during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or cash at arrival at the project site.
