Journalism & Media Internship

Accra, Ghana show on map

VolunteerMatch Ghana has a broadcast journalism for interns/ volunteers in Ghana. Come and join us to make some unforgettable memories while volunteering!

The project

Our journalism internships abroad are a great way to enhance your resume, gain valuable skills, and make you stand out from the crowd.              If you are already a practicing journalist, then interning abroad will broaden your horizons and show you a different way of working in journalism against the backdrop of a new and exciting country. You will learn the ins and outs of print or broadcast journalism in Accra.

Journalism placements

You can choose to work on a print journalism internship - working with an international newspaper or magazine - or on a broadcast internship, where you will work with a radio or TV station abroad. Our journalism internships run year round and have totally flexible dates and durations; whether you want a short-term experience, a unique summer interning opportunity, or a longer term abroad, we can accommodate your needs.

On our Print Journalism placements you not only get an insider's view of how publications are run, but you will also compile an impressive portfolio to take home with you at the end of your project. This international journalism experience will be a valuable confidence builder and will look great on your resume!

Alternatively, an international journalism internship in Radio or Television will provide you with an array of tapes and discs, as well as a host of broadcasting and production experience. Whichever international journalism internship you choose, you will gain great insight into the workings of the international media in a new cultural and political setting.

What you can expect

You will be staying with VolunteerMatch Ghana Homestay 45 minutes from your placement and it’s locate in a safe residential neighborhood. You will have all ammenities at your finger tips. You are also requested to come along with a laptop and a digital camera.

Typical day

On a typical day you will be gathering information for the stories, processing/editing it and getting it ready for final print. On a typical production day you will normally start work about 8.30am and finish between 5.00pm to 7.00pm, but there are no strict hours. You'll observe experts in the field of Journalism and learn how they work in Ghana, and even get to research your own stories. If you have a passion for journalism this is definitely the placement to give you great professional development.

The work that you will be involved in will depend on your experience and abilities, but you will be able to get involved in the basics of Journalism. It is more than likely that you will be able to get involved in assisting the Journalists with getting stories, gathering your own information, taking photos, writing reports, editing and more. If there is something that you are particularly interested in, please let us know and we shall see if we can arrange it for you

Free-time activities

Accra has developed a fairly western social scene in the recent years, mainly because of the large expatriate community in the city. On Friday night, singing karaoke in the champs sports bar at the Paloma Hotel, you would be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back into Europe. And this has its place-after a month living in the village, a cocktail and some fluent English conversation can be just what you need.

There are some great deal of bars in Accra with much more feel, and much more opportunity to interact with Ghanaians, one popular place with volunteers is ’By well’ at the southern end of Osu Oxford street, where the house band plays every Thursday evening. Cape coast also has good bars, ‘Oasis’ on the beach near the Castle is popular and sometimes has impressive live drumming and dancing shows.

Spot bars are usually relatively inexpensive, and the sorts of places local people to for their beer after work. Learning some Twi or Ewe and some Ga from the locals as the sun goes down and sip an ice-cold star or club beer can be a great and very cheap evening out. Labadi beach is also a place where volunteers go swimming and horse riding.

Ghana being a safari destination for tourists, our program has established links to various destinations for our volunteers. Volunteers have the opportunity to visit the famous Kakum canopy walk, Tafi Atome monkey sanctuary, Wli water falls, Cape Coast castle and the Mole national park.
