Jungle Conservationist

Trail maintenance, environmental conservation, work in botanical gardens, work in organic farming

The project
This project is located within the Amazon, with the task to conserve local biodiversity, this is run by a private non profit organization which was founded in 1986, it holds around 200 hectares of land which are a biological reserve. 70% of the land where the project is located - on the southern bank of the Upper Napo River - are still primary forest.

The main goal of the volunteer program is to promote biological conservation, research, environmental education and sustainable management of natural resources. Unlike most reserves this one is not open to the public, so no tourists will be around to visit. But there may be some professional studies or investigations going on while you are at the biological field station.

Your Work
This program is great for anyone who loves nature and being out in the nature, when working you will have an organized schedule every week alongside a local coordinator who operates the biological station. This person is also responsible for all of the assistance and coordination for the volunteers.

Some typical tasks are:
  • collect field data, reforestation,
  • help with environmental education,
  • plant conservation,
  • agro forestry,
  • maintanence,
  • watering plants in the glass-houses,
  • documenting different plants for investigation purposes

The area you will be working in is a very isloated area which is home to indigenous communities who are still preserving ancient tradition and lifestyle, volunteers who stay for a long time can develop English teaching programs with local communities.
