La Esperanza Granada

Kindergarten Assistant

Granada, Nicaragua

Work with pre-school aged children in the kindergarten classrooms. Together with the teacher, you encourage learning through games and crafts.

As a Kindergarten Assistant you work with pre-school aged children (typically ages 4-5) in the kindergarten classrooms. Together with the teacher, you encourage learning through games and crafts. This work is especially rewarding since the kids are extremely friendly and open-minded. Kindergarten assistants work in the mornings, Monday to Friday from 7.30 am till noon. Friday's classes often end early.

This position is available from February to November. The minimum time commitment for this position is 6 weeks, and long term volunteers are always welcome. You should have an intermediate or better level of Spanish to be able to play and chat with the kids.

We provide inexpensive volunteer housing or can arrange for homestays if you prefer.

There are no fees charged to volunteer with La Esperanza Granada. You will have to pay your own cost of living and your own transport. We ask each volunteer to make a $20 contribution to help with administration costs. You are not required to do fund raising, though of course it is welcomed.

Typical day

An average volunteer day would consist of approximately 5 hours of work in the school/community, an hour of traveling to and from the villages, and additional time spent with your fellow volunteers planning for the coming days, discussing the day that has passed, etc. School for the young children starts early - at 7.30 - and you will help the teacher when he/she is explaining new things to the kids. Some kids just need more time and help to understand things. If the kids have their break you can join them while they are playing in the school yard. At the end of the morning there is time to provide one on one tutoring to the kids that need some extra help in recognizing the numbers, vowels or consonants.

There is one mandatory meeting every Tuesday evening where we all get together. Otherwise evenings and weekends are free to enjoy. There are also lots of long weekends here in Nicaragua when most volunteers travel to see other parts of the country.  Very often there are ´surprise´ days off.  Sometimes teachers will receive a call in the morning to say they should have a meeting instead of holding classes, sometimes the government will decree an extra day off for all government workers on the evening news the day before.  Life in general is not planned very far in advance.

Free-time activities

In your free-time in the weekends you can explore the country. Nicaragua is a beautiful, varied country with numerous surfing beaches, volcanos, nature reserves and interesting cities to visit. Granada itself is an old colonial city with a relaxed, cultured atmosphere, and many volunteers enjoy soaking up the atmosphere. Within the city there are numerous good and inexpensive restaurants and bars, gyms, swimming pools and yoga studios and more. Close to Granada, you can hike up one of two volcanoes, kayak or take a boat trip around the lake, take a night tour to an active volcano to see the lava and much more.

There are frequent long weekends in Nicaragua (at least one a month), which most volunteers use as an opportunity to travel and see other parts of the country. Popular destinations for long weekends include the Islas de Ometepe, Leon, San Juan del Sur, and Esteli.

We are very flexible regarding time off if you have friends or family coming to visit for example – but we expect you to respect the commitment that you have made in giving your time to volunteer. Motivating the children to attend school every day is an important part of the volunteers role in the schools so it is vital that you set a good example both with attendance and punctuality.
