Kitchen Assistant

Kitchen assistant volunteer helps in going to the market to buy food, prepare food for cooking, serving food and also cleaning utensils.

Volunteers join our safe, responsible and affordable "Kitchen Assistant" program for a truly memorable experience!

Volunteering as a Kitchen Assistant will be a great way to enhance your cooking skills and you will want to remind yourself to make time each month to plan around your busy schedule to help out at this project.

Volunteers will work with our chef here, also together with teachers.They help in going to the market to buy food, prepare it for cooking, Cooking, serving the children, feeding the toddlers and washing utensils.

The program involves men and women, young and old.

The working surrounding is very nice since the teachers and the chef are very cooperative and helpful.The volunteer will be working with both on the daily basis.

Typical day

Volunteers report at the project every morning at 8.30 am from Monday to Friday. They prepare food to cook. When the food is ready they serve it and wash utencils. Breakfast is served at 10 am and Lunch at 1 pm.

This program is available all year.The volunteer may arrive one day before the set start dates.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 16 years old on the program start date.

Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Free-time activities

Kenya holds a huge population from different tribes. Kenya has 42 tribes and the same ethnic laguages. All the 42 tribes come to Nairobi to look for jobs, do business, and also get academics besides others. This is why Noirobi is the centre for many things.

Things to do & places to visit:

  • Girraffe centre, Snake park, Elephant orphanage, Mamba village [crocodile], national museums of Kenya, Bomas of Kenya [cultural dancers] and other may parks in the city. Nairobi is a city which is cool next to Ngong forest with warm and sometimes cool climate.
  • Mombasa coastal beaches
  • Climbing mountains e.g mt Kilimanjaro-tallest in Africa and Mt Kenya-Tallest in Kenya.
  • Masai mara national park
  • Amboseli national park
  • Tsavo national park
  • Naivasha national park
  • Nakuru national park
  • 14 falls in Kenya¬†

All these are best places which attracts a lot of people in Kenya and volunteers can choose to visit these places after volunteering period or before or during weekends.

What's included?
The fee includes 3 meals per day and accommodation.
We provide airport pick up but it is not included in the volunteer program fees.

Volunteers stay in a guest family and share a room with another volunteer or a family member or can stay alone in a room. Bathrooms and toilets are shared.

The host family will provide food and beverages and not alcohols.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.

Average fees

You can volunteer at the project site in Nairobi/Kenya between 1 week and 50 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Havilla Childrens Centre will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Havilla Childrens Centre during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
