Make a great contribution towards the prevention of Deforestation as this is a continuous problem in the area. As a result, many of the natural habitats of the different species are being threatened. Be a volunteer and help to monitor the different forest species and the information you collect will help to make decisions on how to better manage and protect the last forests of beautiful Madagascar! Venture out of your comfort zone and into an adventure like no other. While volunteering, you will camp out in tents and have no access to running water or hot water and use long-drop toilets! Experience living in the jungle and stay at the volunteer house on weekends! Explore the magnificent beaches and rural villages and learn a new culture and way of life of the people of Madagascar. This is perfect for those who have a love for nature and the environment and would like to do some field work. The project also accepts persons who want to do individual researches so don’t miss this wonderful volunteer opportunity! 

This project is located in beautiful Madagascar that is still in its developmental stage as such do not expect too much luxury. All amenities including limited internet access will be provided at a walking distance from your accommodation on weekends. Experience the island life and take in the magnificent beaches and coastline, tropical rainforests, abundant wildlife, amazing architecture and enjoy the simplicity of life.

You will be volunteering alongside international volunteers and experienced staff who will guide you and train you during your experience. No Special skills or equipment is required for this program. We do require strong work ethics: reliable, responsible, honest, good sense of humor, mature, dependable, physically and mentally fit.

Typical day

Madagascar is rich in biodiversity and is home to many animals and plants that can be only be found in the area. Then forest is also a major victim to deforestation which continues to be a problem in the area. As a result many of the natural habitats are being threatened. As a volunteer you will help to monitor valuable and rare species such as lemurs so that the data you collect will provide information towards making well informed decisions about the natural habitats for the species. Some of your responsibilities include:

  • Assist in monitoring the various forest species including lemurs!
  • Help in research and collection of data
  • Contribute towards decision making about the forests.
  • Cultural activities

Details on Arrival

There are no specific start/arrival dates for this project however, we recommend that you arrive on a Monday.

Free-time activities

Volunteers have the opportunity to go on tours, hiking, ATV/4X4/Bike rides, visit the beaches and so much more however this will be at an extra cost.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (intermediate level)

Fronteering Travel (your host organization) provides consulting and is keen to answer all your questions. Once you reserved your spot, you will receive the contact details of your volunteer project.

Services by Fronteering Travel

The Fee Includes:


  • Accommodation - You will camp out in tents during the week with no access to running water and little solar power. On weekends you will have a dorm style sleeping accommodation in a basic but clean and comfortable volunteer house at Fort Dauphin.
  • Meals - Three meals a day will be provided!
  • Airport Pick + Drop off - You will fly to Antananarivo (Airport code TNR) and catch a connecting flight to Fort Dauphin. A member of the project will meet you at the airport. If u like, a 4x4 transportation can be arranged for you to travel from Antananarivo to Fort Dauphin. Upon completion of the project, you will be taken to the airport.
  • Ongoing Services and 24/7 Emergency Contact

Airport Pickup at Antananarivo Airport

You will arrive in Antananarico where you will either catch a connecting flight to Fort Dauphin or take a 4x4 to the Fort Dauphin which allows you to have a better view of the area. Be sure that your international flight arrival gives you sufficient time to catch the connecting flight otherwise you will need to spend the night in Antananarivo. The next day we will pick you up from your accommodation and transfer to the project. After your arrival you will be have an orientation. 

Accommodation

During the week days you will camp out in a tent next to your project. All necessary living equipment including fresh drinking water and washing water will be provided for. However, you will not have access to running water, no hot showers, little solar power and you will have to use long-drop toilets! On weekends, you will be staying at the volunteer house with dorm style sleeping arrangements in Fort Dauphin and will have access to all the amenities including a communal kitchen and lounge area, electricity and showers.

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Antananarivo Airport (TNR) in Antananarivo. We assist you to find cheap flights to Madagascar.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Madagascar provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Madagascar you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Madagascar.

You can volunteer at the project site in Antananarivo/Madagascar between 2 weeks and 8 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Fronteering Travel will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Madagascar.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Fronteering Travel during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash.
