Literacy: Boys' LitClub Assistant

We believe that all children have the right to read, to write and to share their words to change the world. This project helps them tell their story.

Otra Cosa Network has the amazing opportunity to work with LitWorld, an international organisation which promotes literacy skills and builds self-confidence in young girls from a more disadvantaged background. Following the success of our Girls' LitClub in Cerrito de la Virgin, we are proud to introduce LitWorld's second Peruvian project and this time it's the boys turn: Boys' LitClub Las Lomas, on the edge of Huanchaco.

Volunteers work with a local teacher and coordinate with the organization in New York all whilst having a great time working with the boys, encouraging creativity and freedom of expression using the LitWord curriculum – and of course their own excellent ideas. Volunteers with all levels of Spanish are able to work with LitClub (especially as it is a great way to improve their Spanish language skills) but having an intermediate or higher knowledge of Spanish would be particularly useful.  LitClub runs one afternoon a week, but there is more work involved, organising materials, planning lessons and coordinating with the LitWorld organisation, It is a perfect project to combine with others!

LitClub is truly an amazing project; it is wonderful to watch the boys become more and more confident in themselves and in their ideas, which they express through writing, reading, drawing and storytelling. The project requires enthusiastic volunteers who are passionate about reading and writing and good with relating to others.  LitClub is a truly rewarding project and a good challenge, we look forward to seeing you there!

Free-time activities

Huanchaco is a beautiful coastal town where the waves are perfect all year long, for all types of surfers. Huanchaco is surrounded by some mountains where it is possible to go hiking (tours are arranged by local guides, at reasonable prices). Furthermore, there's a beautiful white mountain range, the cordillera blanca, situated in Huaraz, fairly close to Huanchaco (9h bus ride), which offers a good many hiking and climbing possibilities in the most fascinating landscape. If you prefer cultural activities, we are a few minutes away from the Chan Chan and Huaca del sol y de la luna, which are among the most well-preserved temple ruins of the old Incan empire that can be found in Peru. The town of Huanchaco has a gym, and you can find some fields to play basketball and football close to the beach.
